Is it possible to use a baby carrier with twins? Does anyone make them specifically for twins, or a carrier for one baby that is on the side to allow the other side to hold the other baby?
Any suggestions welcome (my friend would love some advice from twin Mums/Dads),
Yep!! It sure is Kate! Personally, I haven't tried carrying two, as I only have one carry-ee. So I can't speak from experience, yet.
Get your friend to go and check out thebabywearer. Or google baby carriers downunder and join the google group - there are a few members who either carry twins, or a toddler and newborn and I'm sure they would love to help her find the babywearing love.
I've seen on ebay some very scary, and uncomfortable looking carriers that are designed for twins. As far as I'm aware, there are no good carriers recommended by any babywearing groups that are specifically designed for twins. But, there are ways to use two carriers (eg: two rings slings - one on each shoulder, or two wraps or one longer wrap, or a mei-tai front and back) that will give the most flexibility and comfort.
I carried both my DDs for a while - felt a bit like a pack horse but it was actually more convenient and comfortable than it probably looked.
I had DD#1 in an ergo on my back and DD#2 in a ring sling. It took a bit of jiggling, mainly to get DD#2 sitting around the straps to the ergo, but it was pretty good. You couldn't use the ergo on your back for a newborn but as the PP said, maybe a mei-tai could double. Not sure I would want two ring slings as I find that they put a bit too much pressure on my neck and shoulders.
