Hi all...has anyone had any experience with a newborn who doesn't sleep - basically at all - during the day/night?? Our DD is 6 weeks old tomorrow and barely sleeps during the day (maybe between 1 feed and that's it - oher than 5-15 minutes here & there) and won't sleep before say 2 am, but then sleeps finally (exhuasted?) for maybe 4 or 5 hours.
She has a lot of troubles with wind...can't seem to get it up...we've tried infants friend and infacol but I'm wondering if it's reflux problems (our DS had 'severe' reflux)...she's fine while she's upright but as soon as we lay her down (elevated at top end) she wakes crying... She doesn't purk much like DS did but I think there is a version of reflux where they don't purk right??
Anyway, any thoughts welcome...we've tried lots of stuff but the wind just seems to be the problem...
It could just be a growth spurt (Mia does the same thing). For reflux try Gaviscon INFANT and for the wind try Breuers Colic relief. Hope this helps Good luck
DS was very much like that at the same age - it was worst around the 5-6 week mark, and then gradually got better. He had silent reflux (ie, without the puking) and could only sleep if we held him upright. I slept sitting up in bed holding him for a week or two, and then was able to gradually incline over time, till finally he was able to lie down again.
He hardly slept at all during the day (maybe 1-2 20-minute naps, that was it). once the night sleeping improved (with some work from us thanks to 'The no-cry sleep solution' and an improvement in his reflux) the day sleeps also got better. That said, he's never been a great sleeper (nope, doesn't sleep through even now) and doesn't seem to need as much as other babies that sleep all the time.
Hang in there, it does get better
i had same problems with my youngest at 5-6 weeks age
she had extremely bad wind and suffered from silent reflux
we tried absolutely everything even took her to a paediatrician.
i really feel for you because its such a hard challenging time. please know that it will get better. it was really hard for me cause my other child was only 18 months and juggling them both was exhausting.
we tried her on different special formulas the paed recommended and even on a medication sorry i forgot the name.
neocate formula seemed to do the trick as well as inclining her mattress.
im pretty sure it settled by around six months.. seems like a lifetime ahead but stick it out hun it does get easier.
hugs to you
Thanks girls! Yeah DS had reflux (not silent - he was a mega puker!) and was on Losec for 16 months...he never slept as a baby either but because DD isn't puking I just wondered if it might be something else. It seems she has all the same 'symptoms' as DS had but without the puking. Am just hoping it's a growth spurt (she's already over 6 kgs and was born at 4.9 kgs!!!) but I am almost certain it's probably reflux... Bummer!
DD was much the same - we could get her to sleep in her bouncer chair thing - upright - but as soon as we put her down - she woke up screaming.
She had chiro and a homeopath put her on some drops and she is a completely different baby since about 8 weeks.
She sleeps easier now - sleeps through the night and has great naps during the day (ie, she has had three naps already today - for about 90 minutes AT LEAST each time).
Can't hurt to take them to a homeopath - cos Infacol, infant gaviscon and bruaers colic relief only worked for about a week before her symptoms returned....
