Baby sick with cold!

This is Peter's first cold and I'm not sure if there is anything else I should be doing. He has a fever (up to 38.8 so far), runny nose, sore throat and dry cough. He has felt rotten all day, poor little mite. We've held him all day and let him nap on us and TRIED to get him to drink (water, juice, sucking on washcloth, ice/grapes in mesh bag) and he just won't drink. He still drank some milk today, so he got something. And he ate some store-bought baby-food jelly.

I resisted giving him panadol all day as I know the fever is "good", but I did give him some tonight before bed.

Anything else I can try to help him feel better??

I was told by the Nurses on Call line that you shouldn't give panadol for a fever under 40 degrees because otherwise its classed as a low grade beneficial fever. Does anyone know if this sounds right? I understand the concept of a beneficial fever, but 40 seems AWFULLY high to me....

if they are grizzly and un happy with fever I would give regardless of what temp is.

as the more restless and upset they are the harder for them to rest and fight bugs!

DD takes water or hydrolyte with a syringe if she isn't drinking otherwise. The temp thing does sound right to me, but it's hard not to give it when they are miserable. I usually use the 'if I felt like that, would I want Panadol?' method. I agree with feeb that it can only be a good thing if they are able to sleep better. Hope he feels better soon.
