At what age did you get rid of your childs dummy?

I really want to get rid of Toby's dummy. When at CC he only has it for sleeping and the same at home, except he probably has it a little bit more at home during the day.

At what age and HOW did you get rid of your childs dummy?

for my daughter whom is now 10 when she started walking we started to chop off the teat of the dummie so eventually they were all chopped off. she would sometimes hold it in her hand and eventually didnt want it anymore and then i threw it out.

DS still has his to sleep with - but even though he is two, I'm not too worried.. he'll choose when its ready to give it up.

Already he comes to me and says "yuck" when he has woken up - so hopefully that will extend to going to sleep as well... I can wish!!

12 months

it was her choice and i stopped offering it to her

she got offered a breastfeed if upset

so i didn't engineer the change, just took her lead.

that was our experience.

actually now that i think about it, she was offered the dummy all the time during those first 12 months, we used it more as a last resort.

we took dd dummy away 2weeks b4 her 2nd bday... one night she was violently ill and from that night she never had a bottle or a dummy, we told her they'd make her sick, she never asked again & when her brother came along she used to say only babies have dummmies
so 4 us it was simple, like ur ds she was limited to whn she could have it ect!

Im trying to turn it into a game of throwing the dummy back into the cot when i get him up from a nap! Sometimes he'll do it, he'll throw it in and laugh and then clap And then other times, he has to have one in his mouth and one in his hand before he'll even leave his room!

Sometimes i think he's to big to have a dummy now, but when he's teething or sick, i know how much he'd want it. I think the best thing to do is wait til he's ready and take his lead (like most things!)

DS #1 - 2yo - he got a glandular infection just when DD was born and was too sick to suck on it - we never gave it back to him ...

DD - got lazy, until Christmas she had it for night time - more mind over matter though - she would tease us, go to bed and as soon as asleep it was on the floor anyway so we didn't push it - we thought earlier but I was preg, then angel, preg again so other priorities. She put it into the bin herself one day so we said ok that's really it LOL

DS#2 - he only has it for sleep, he never takes it during the day - and once he is in a deep sleep he spits it out too ... he is only little ..

ds3 just gave it up when ready just so happened to be the day i bought him a new one too
