Speech - 16 months

Okay so having one of my freak out moments which I have occasionally so bare with me! Mackenzie (16 months) says: dad dad, mum mum, nan nan, hi, do (dog), du (duck) and do (dorothy). She also does a lot of babbling!

Does this sound fairly normal? Other kids at mum's group say lots of words and some of those say "mummy" instead of the double mum mum. Should I be concerned? I think she actually understands quite a lot and is always pointing but I haven't heard many clear words. When do they start repeating words?

I know of course that kids all develop at diff stages but would love to hear about your kids and when they started talking. Did they suddenly just take off one day?

my boy is 17 months and say teh same stuff as your cutie, heaps of shortend words and mumma and dada.

it happensovernight somtimes- i just say somthing and he will try to say it

Yep, for us it was very sudden! One day about 3 weeks ago, DD, who is 16 months too, just started trying to copy everything I said, and she will give everything a go, whereas the day before she used to just look at me blankly! I say "can you say milk?" and she will say "ulk", and "can you say block", and she goes "ock"... She tries names, everything. Most things don't sound all that spot on, but I know what she means. She now has a few more favourites that she says over and over. But it was really sudden, one day nothing except mumma and dadda and woof, and now she is saying "oopdedaidy" (oopsiedaisy) and I can't shut her up!!

Wait for it, it will happen very soon I am sure

Jordie - we have almost no words here. Lots of dada and occasional mama, but that's it. She has a lot of expression and talks to herself all the time and totally understands everything we say. I figure she will just start talking one day - my sister's first words were 'I'm not going in the water' - mum hadn't understood anything before that and she was almost 2 when that came out (hasn't stopped talking since though)

I had the exact same concerns, but as everyone has said DON'T WORRY it will happen. Blake is 21 months and about a month ago he started repeating and mimicking. The pronunciation isn't spot on but as his mum I understand.

As everyone has said, it's usually out of the blue. He is spitting out colours and things aswell all in the blink of an eye!

One my DS just "popped" out with this morning was "Tricked ya". He'd popped out from behind something. I said, "What? Where on Earth did that come from?"

Most stuff he says is just two year old babble, with useful words mixed in for good luck and getting stuff he wants.
