Toddler diarrhoea - how to stop it

    Hi ya,
Does anyone know how i can cease diarrhoea in an 18 month old toddler. It has caused such bad nappy rash that it is a nightmare cleaning her little tush as it is red raw.
We need to check her nappy every 10-15 mins, it is that bad.
    Thanks muchly..

Sounds like she has a touch of gastro poor tyke. There isn't much you can do but let it run it's course - make sure she is having lots of water to keep her fluid intake up as dehydration can be a problem. Hope she is better soon.

You could try giving some activated charcoal - it helps bind the stool, and also helps any toxins to pass out through the bowel rather than hanging around. If you buy the charcoal capsules, you can crack one or two open, mix it into some honey, and give it on a teaspoon. My DD calls it 'black honey' LOL

ETA - if the diarrhoea continues or your child becomes "flat" you may want to take her to the Drs for a stool test - rule out any nasties. Other things to consider other than gastro are food intolerances (which CAN cause a rash at the other end as well as unsettled tums) or just too much summer fruit LOL. Another old remedy for diarrhoea involves grating apple, let it turn a bit brown, then feeding it to them. Something about the pectin in the apple binds the stool. But really follow your intuition and see your doctor if there's no improvement.

You could try coating her poor bottom in sudocream.
Its a barrier cream & might stop it burning so bad as well as maybe soothing it a bit.
I used to take the nappy off & put them in the shower to clean them if it hurt that bad.

Eating a banana can help bind her up. Poor little thing

    Thanks ladies.

We coat her bum in sudocream at every nappy change. It is the only nappy rash cream i have used on both my kids. I love it.
I will certainly try all 3 natural remedies, apples, bananas and the charcoal (i use charcoal myself occasionally). I hope i don't get her constipated!

She actually has a throat infection, which started off as a high fever on Monday night, which was then followed by vomiting and diarrhoea. The vomiting has ceased and now for ceasing the bottom end!

    Thanks again.

    hun.
When they have diarrohea like that it is for a reason.
It is the body's natrual response to get rid of a bug in the gut.

I wouldnt be trying to bung her up thats for sure.

Apply a barrier cream each change and wash your hand thoroughly.

Give small amounts of fluid frequenty.

I would hold off on solids (esp if bub doesnt feel like eating them) as the diarrohea will just continue as there is lot of food in the belly and gut for the bacteria to grow on and the body will continue to flush it out.

FLuids are more more important. Water especially, if you want foods go for dry starchy foods like toast or plain pasta.
