Nappy Rash Creams... do any have local anasthetic?

Hi there,

My son has incredibly bad nappy rash at the moment. He skin is open and bleeding in parts. It is breaking my heart changing his nappy at the moment and I can't stop crying. He won't sit on his bottom at all and he also has a little diarrohea. I can't bath him properly because he just screams and screams.

I have tried EVERY cream on the shelves but nothing is soothing him or helping his bottom. Are there any available that have a local anaesthetic?

The best one over the counter for bad nappy rash is Daktozin, which the chemist has.
Talk to the pharmacist and describe his nappy rash, but I think if it was me I would go to the doctors and see if there is something prescription only that they can give you.

an anaesthetic is not recommended for use on broken sjkin, especially in babies. Resolve balm has a soothing agent in it which helps with the pain and irritation/inflammation (cortisone-free). It also has an antifungal which is what you need for nappy rash. Paraderm plus may also help with the pain ( can't remember if it has an anaesthetic, but it is a great with inflammation/cuts/bruises. You could perhaps mix the two and use a good "slather on" for maximum protection.

other tips for quick recovery,
- clean with warm water/saline and cotton pads rather than nappy wipes (can cause irritation)
- don't use powder (they form little "balls" with sweat/urine and macerate (soften and irritate) the skin
- use a light barrier cream (put anti-fungal cream on first before the barrier cream) like silic c at every nappy change.
- air-out bum or have nappy-free time for at least 1/2 an hour each day.
- don't use plastic pilchers/nappy pants. use cotton breathable clothes.
- give bub a probiotic (inner health plus has a powder form you can mix in milk)
- you can put solugel on any open blisters to sooth and for quick healing

Bepanthen is a nappy rash cream & has an anaesthetic in it.
Maybe read the pack about the broken skin thing, not too sure there.

Thanks Bjrose. I tried the Bepanthen and it didn't help him much actually.

I have spent a small fortune on nappy creams in the last couple of days!! I guess I was just hoping for a miracle cream that cleared his bottom up magically in an instant.

I will give him some nappy free time tomorrow and stop using baby wipes on him for tonight.

ooh yeah, no nappy wipes. Try using a facewasher with water.
The times when DS had bad nappy rash I laid down all the spare towels I could find on the floor and left his nappy for for 2-3 hours

Very good advice above.

I have found that combining Sigmacort with canesten, that'll treat just about any nappy rash that doesn't involve a bacterial infection (and if it doesn't start getting better after 24 hours with these I'd be going to the dr to check). Both available over the counter, I apply one after the other and with a barrier cream.

I also rinse off DD's bum with lukewarm water (not in the bath, just on the change table) when she's rashy, seems kinder than wipes.

Other things to think about:
Have you fed any new foods/a lot of a particular food lately? Bad nappy rash can be a sign of food intolerance. It could even be something seasonal like summer fruit, kwim?
Have you changed nappies/washing powder/wipes/bath lotion lately? Some brands set some kids off.

Gosh I was just about to come in here and do this post myself this morning before my trip to the chemist. DS has such bad nappy rash at the moment that he screams blue murder at every nappy change/ every time he wee's etc. My poor little man has done 12 poos today, and with each one it just gets worse (he is teething). The chemist I saw told me to use dermaid (it has cortisone in it) a couple of times a day, and use Nappy Mate paste as a barrier. We dont have broken skin at the moment, so you might need something diff.
I have already decided that if DS's bum is no better by tues I will take him to the Dr. to see if I cant get something else prescribed.

i along with my dd were alregic to most zinc based nappy cream's and she came out in an incrediable rash similar to what you describe , i use Pawpaw Cream - Red Tube in the antispectic cream isle , it does not contain anesetic , but it does sooth and my nasty rashes are gone in 24 to 30 hrs normaly . hope you find something soon .

I work in child care and discovered last year that herron zinc and caster oil contains peanuts. We had an anaphalactic child at the time so that was scary! Not sure about the other nappy creams but just thought I would throw that out there incase it's the creams stiring up an allergy. I haven't needed to use it just but also brought paw-paw and weleda nappy creams cause they are natural. Hope your bubs bottom clears up soon.

My eldest DD used to get extreme nappy rash and I found that using cloth nappies made it worse as it held the wetness next to her skin. I put her on bepanthen because she got worse on zinc based creams and started using disposables. The rash cleared up within 48 hrs and I have never used any thing else since. The disposables helped to because they kept the wetness or poop away from their skin.
