M/s is really starting to depress me - TMI

Hi there,
Last pregnancy, I suffered terrible morning sickness. I would throw up as soon as I woke every morning. I was given maxalon to try and help, and it did nothing. I would need a bucket beside my bed as I would have to throw up before my feet hit the floor. The nausea wasn't too bad, and once I had been sick, I felt good and could go about the rest of my day.

Fast forward to this pregnancy. M/s started a few weeks earlier. The nausea I have this time is 100 times worse than anything I ever experienced last pregnancy. I am throwing up every day like last time with a day off here and there. I am throwing up so much that I am bringing up blood, like last pregnancy.
This time, I am not sick before my feet hit the floor. I am horribly nauseas as soon as I wake up. I then have to wait to be sick every single morning, which happens, and then I feel horrid for another couple of hours before I can even think about having something to eat or drink that will stay down.


Ok, so I have tried EVERYTHING. I mean everything aside form medication. Eating before I get out of bed does absolutely nothing, except when I am sick (TMI AHEAD) I bring the food up and nearly choke trying to get it out. It's horrible. I make sure I have some water, but that comes back up. It makes the bile and any stomach contents less acidic, although they are still pretty harsh. I have tried all of the different wives tales to try and halt the m/s, to no avail. I'm starting to get desperate.

I am starting to get REALLY depressed about it. I have handled it fine up until recently. I am usually a really really chirpy person, which I still am around others, but at home, I am terribly unhappy. I am not coping at all in this heat, and nearly went into hospital last week as I could keep nothing at all down until well after 3pm. My teeth have had it. They are horrible and I am so embarrassed by them. I cannot brush my teeth until very late in the evening as I gag and it does make me sick.
I don't know if I can go another 15 weeks (at least) being like this and having my 18 month old to look after. I have no faith in maxalon at all. I really hate to take anything during pregnancy, but it's getting to the point where I need relief. My throat needs relief. My poor poor teeth I am so ashamed of them that I am scared to go to the dentist, as I worry that they will think I have just been lazy.

All I do each morning when I get out of bed is, go to the loo for the usuals (not being sick), grab my bucket, and sit down and wait to throw up. My poor son, who I make sure I feed in the meantime, has to play on his own and keep himself occupied while I wait to throw up. It's horrible.

I am not entirely sure what the point of this post is. I guess I just want to know if anyone knows how I am feeling. I feel horrible because there are people who suffer hypermesis, and have it so much worse than me. I really shouldn't complain.

I know you have been having a tough time and the heat mustn't be helping at all.....just keep thinking of that kovely little pink bundle in your arms at the end of it all....

And maybe you DO need to go to see a doc about it - it does sound VERY extreme!!

Hi. I had a condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum while pg with my girls. Severe ms.
I was admitted to hospital on IV once with DD1 & twice with DD2.
I was throwing up up to 17 times a day. It was hard & horrible. Maxollon sent me off my rocker for some reason, so I couldn't have it.
Have you tried ginger beer? Ginger bikkies or something?
Mine only lasted til 20 - 25 weeks, but it can last the whole pg.
I hope you feel better soon. I know how you feel.

starting to depress you? i think i would have cracked waaay before you have i think you're amazing for getting this far and i have no idea how you've done it.

would you consider going to the doctors? you shouldn't have to live like this, you should be able to enjoy your pregnancy & spending time with your DS...i know you said the medication didn't help last time, but maybe there's something else?

also, (and i'm worried i'm beginning to sound like some sort of crazy woman always talking about it) but have you considered seeing an acupunturist? i haven't had to resort to it, but the a/c i saw said they can ease m/s...i guess at this stage, maybe anything is worth trying?

I have tried all the different concoctions.. biccies ginger ale etc... to no avail.
I have an appt tomorrow and I am currently writing a huge list about everything that's happened and what I am feeling. I would cry on cue, but feel like I need to save the fluids for bub. LOL

Accupuncture I have never tried. I am severly overweight, another thing that holds me back from seeking help. I think this pregnancy, I am willing to try anything though, so if the docs can't help me tomorrow, I think I will hunt around for an accupuncturist. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

Oh Nicky, the BIGGEST to you babe. I can empathise to a point. I suffered with HG with both my boys, in and out of hospital, but it subsided at around the 18 week mark. I honestly don't know what I would have done if it had gone on any longer. My mental state would not have been good, and I didn't have a toddler to look after either!! It is a cruel thing to go through. I just hope you can get some relief soon, I tried everything also and yep nothing worked. Like Beejay said, it might be a good idea to see a doctor.

Oh and btw, my teeth are shocking too....

I have a question.
I have just attempted lunch, my first meal for the day, and half has come back up. I am struggling and feel reasonably light headed and just really really tired.
Should I call my midwives? I have an appt tomorrow at the AN clinic tomorrow, and I just don't know if I am serious enough to be seen. I would really love to know what anyone thought.

I would call them, or even just head into the ER. You are probably very dehydrated and in need of some fluids. Oh I so hope you get better soon. I have tears in my eyes thinking about you.

i reckon you should give them a call - there's no harm in telling them what's been happening & letting them tell you whether you should come in. maybe they say no, but maybe they say yes & they can offer something to help. either way, it might help put your mind at rest a little

Good idea, definately call, put your mind at ease and get some support. Your m/s sounds like pure hell.

I would strongly advise seeing an acupuncturist. There is an incredibly effective point on the inside of your wrist that has wonderful anti-nausea effects. I used treatment on this spot when I had m/s and it absolutely took the edge off. I have treated friends with all sorts of nausea using both needles and acupressure on this spot with great results, a friend with food poisoning managed to get relief and sleep with needles in place, a friend with a really bad hangover who could not get above horizontal sat up and was ready to face the day when I had my finger pressed into the spot! (Unfortunately once I removed my finger, she was bedridden again).

You can pick up some wrist bands from some chemists and travel shops called "seabands" or travel sickness bands. (they are used for motion sickness, on boats or on the road) They sit around your wrist and have a little knob which applies pressure to the acupuncture point so that you can get about normally without nausea. The seabands have instructions for where the point is but just so you can give it a go, put some pressure (using your thumb) on a spot right in the middle of the two tendons on your inner wrist, about 3 fingerwidths down from your wrist crease. If you run your thumb down from your wrist between the tendons you may feel a really subtle hollow there. Keep the pressure on for a bit and slowly you should begin to feel a decrease in your nausea. Hope it works for you , in the meantime I will try to find you a link with some better instructions.

I hope the middies have been able to give you some good advice over the phone this afternoon.
I too would be going to a dr to see if there's anything they could give me if I were as sick as you have been.
Or maybe a naturopath might be able to help you with some more 'hard-core' natural remedies?

Hi luv

I am still vomiting almost every morning...the ONLY thing I have found that helps (funnily enough) is Ural...which is usually used for UTI's.

It alkalises the acid in my belly...I just drink a glass (I have 2 sachets in a glass of water) slowly in the morning while still in bed, just sip at it, until it is all gone and I feel MUCH better for it.

Nothing else has helped me but this so maybe give it a go? You can get it from the chemist.

There is an over the couter sleep aide you can take called Restavit, you have to ask at the counter for it but I took 2 tabs a day with 100mgs of B6 a day to cure my HG, it worked a treat and it is a catagory A drug meaning it is safe to take during pregnancy. I know how awful it is. I had burst blood vessels around my eyes from the vomiting, I dread the next time I get pregnant although now I know the trick.

Thanks so much everyone. I have been to the hospital and back home now. Bubs and I are actually in really good condition, and there were no keytones in my urine (so apparently I wasn't dehydrated, but I must have been close). Anyway, even though I feel like cr@p, we are both pretty healthy. I have been put on Zofran, as they agree maxalon won't help me. We are going to see how this goes, and if it works, fantastic, if not, we try other things.

I think I will look into accupuncture aswell. Can they perform that on an overweight person? I have no idea?
