work in tandem to reach equilibrium?
not sure if that helps, just the only thing i could think of.
Hi,
I am writing a section on ethics for my thesis. i am stuck on the first sentence in looking at beneficence. i then go onto to talk about how beneficence/non-maleficence relates to my topic. It is just an introductory sentence but i can't get the words right.
Any ideas will be considered. It's like the heat has fried my brain.
Thank-you in advance!
Kate
I am having difficulty getting the right words for this sentence:
"The principles of beneficence (to do good) and non-maleficence (to do no harm) work in tandem and are balanced against each other."
I think the first bit is right, just don't think the last bit (and are balanced against each other) is quite right.
are any of these better
...must be balanced against each other.
... and a balance between the two....
is there a better word than balance?
work in tandem to reach equilibrium?
not sure if that helps, just the only thing i could think of.
Thanks, equilibrium is another word i have been tossing around!
"...work in tandem and complement each other."
I studied Ethics in my undergad years....if you're still going on ethics and/or ethics clearence for your thesis I can post you my text books to borrow if you like.
Hubby went though a heaps of ethics stuff for his Masters and now his Phd so I feel your pain!
is synchronicity a word you could use?
"The principles of beneficence (to do good) and non-maleficence (to do no harm) work in tandem and are balanced against each other."
"The tandem principles of beneficence (to do good) and non-maleficence (to do no harm) must be balanced ."
The fact that you have already mentioned they are tandem principles and the placement in the sentence of those concepts means that the phrase 'against each other' becomes unnecessary.

I heard some advice the other day re: thesis writing - "It's important to remember that bad writing can be edited, a blank page cannot"... I liked it.
Shades, that's brilliant! lol love it, going to steal it ;P
Steal away - I did!
Oh and the other good one was what PhD really stands for... Permanent head Damage... but I think that may be an old one...
