Travelling to Japan

Hi All,

Not sure if I've posted this in the right section.......

We're travelling to Japan next week Just wondering if any of you have been to Japan with a bub and how you found the availability of....
1) baby food
2) disposable nappies
3) wipes

We're going for 2 weeks and I'm planning on taking some of each of the above but DS is an eating and pooing machine so I can't possibly take enough for the entire trip. He still has 4 BF's per day so I don't need to worry about formula or anything like that.

Here I am, thanks for the heads up Sacha.

How, how exciting, we just spent over 2 weeks there in November, loved it. Where abouts are you going? We spent most our time in Nagoya, with travelling here and there on day trips. DH works over there occassionally.

O.K to answer your questions.....


1) Baby Food, take as much as you can in your bag, as there isn't much over there that is in English. You can sort of work out what things might be, but if possible take your own. Not to mention with the exchange rate the way it is ATM, nothing is cheap either. Both my babies were eating normal food when we went, our youngest being 16mths at the time, we didn't have to rely on it. But I remember looking at the local 99c store and couldn't see any that I was sure what it was, lol

2) Disposable nappies, if only I can remember the brand???? but they were the only ones I could find, but they were awesome, the best ever, cheap as well. Couldn't find them in the stores, only in the pharmacy. But I loved them, just wish we had room to bring more back. I only took 1 packet with us, as they take up so much room, but as long as you take 1 big packet, and keep an eye out for a pharmacy as soon as you get there, you should be right. Hopefully then, you will have enough room for the baby food.

3) Wipes, I took 2 or 3 packets of 80 wipes, and was lucky it was enough for the 2 of our babies for the whole 2 and a bit weeks. So with just one, I'm sure a couple of packets would be enough, and they don't take up much room in a bag. So sorry with this one, didn't take notice in the stores.

Oh your so going to love it there, just remember your woolies, we went in November and it was cold enough then. DH was there this time last year, and said you would not believe how cold it was. Hard to imagine with the heat the way it is, hey.....

Anyway, I hope this has helped a little. It's lovely over there.

Oh, one more tip, make sure you take baby panadol or nurphen and dimetapp and cold and flu medicine for the two of you, as trying to communicate with the staff in the pharmacy is like a game of charaids (sp?), but part of the fun IYKWIM.

You've certainly put my mind at ease about the nappies. Food will be interesting though. ATM I've got about 4 days worth and it weighs about 4kgs! The other option I may have is doing a bit of cooking if I can get my hands on some fruit and veges. I think we're going to have access to a kitchen for a while so that may be my best option.

We're having a couple of days in Tokyo and then we're going to Hakuba to ski at Hapoone for 6 days. After that we're headed to Kyoto for a few days before heading back to Tokyo to fly home. Any suggestions of what we shouldn't miss in these spots?

Thanks for the advice on the baby Panadol etc. We're all fitted out with warm gear and ski stuff - incl DS (he looks so cute!)

Your more than welcome Really no problem.

There is great fresh fruit and veges, where we stayed anyway. So if you have access to a kitchen, that would be the best way to go for sure.

Oh your holiday sounds just devine. Sorry I can't be of much help with those locations, but I'm sure you'll have a great time. I love skiing and I've heard Japan offers some of the best. Oh have a great time, I'm so jealous

hi there, not sure if you will see this, but it came up as I am a Bellybelly member thinking of going to Japan with my 2 children, 6 years old and then to be 6 months old.

I have heard there are NO cots in accomodation? is this right?

what else did you find NOT baby friendly or the opposite - what was wonderful??

I think that might just depend where you stay. The hotel we were in had a portacot for us. Might just pay to email them to confirm before booking.

what about for a 4 month old? we are planning to go this august and just wondering what you did with sterilising bottles there and on the plane as we will be stopping at singapore first then to osaka, kyoto.

Bubbles, you can buy sterilizing tablets to use for water in bottles and I'll guess you might just have to take enough bottles to get you through the plan trip. You should be able to sterilize bottles in boiling water if you have access to a kitchen over there.
