How Do You know which Size You need more of?

I am having my baby in July and I am really confused about what sizes to buy?? I purchased a few 0000's at the Target baby sale and I was showing a friend the other day, who said "They are really small for 4x0's".. I was then considering taking them back and exchanging them for 3x0's instead..
I recently received a gift that was also 4x0's, However, it looks like quite a generous size.

How do you know which size to get?

if you got Bonds clothes, go up a size (so if you wanted a 0000 for nb stage, get a 000) as they are notoriously small sized

don't get tooo many 0000's simply because you may have a baby that only fits them for a week or so. i would suggest mostly 000 or bigger - 000 will, on average, fit til around 12 weeks (only on average though - if you have a big baby maybe less, small baby longer - long skinny baby may be too long for them earlier)

we have a real mixture of larger sized stuff (000 and larger) - very limited 0000 stuff simply because you have to wash everything before you use it in hospital, and i'd hate to have stuff that is too small - too big is easier to cope with (add a singlet or singlet suit under a grow suit)

i think that for the newborn stage (really the first 6 weeks) you should be fine with 0000s. some bubs are born bigger and some smaller. the target 0000 that i bought were pretty smack on for age IMO. whereas bonds i find fits smaller ITMS.

any of the clothes bought from the coles aisle section fit bigger IMO. so leila wore 0000 for the first 6 months in that range.

My DD started out in 00000 (5x) as she was 2.7kgs when born (bit of a surprise!). so you never really know if you have the perfect size (i had only bought 000 and 0000 sizes which were swimming on her). she wore the first size for about 8 weeks. then moved up to the next (just to get an idea of timing).

stick with the 0000 and if some seem smaller then you'll probably just end up using them first!

also recommend 000 as some bubs go into these straightaway!

I didint get anything smaller than 000 for DS, and have been given 1 thing in a 0000 for this bub.
Based on DS which is all Ihave to work with, my baby wont fitin 000 for much more than 6-7 weeks. If by chance I have a smaller bub I'll get DH to go out and get some things in smaller, and the 000s can wait til they fit. If I get a whole stack in 0000 and have another very long baby, they'd not be used (by us anyway)

For my first, I bought some 0000's and some 000's. He never fit any 0000's, being 9lb4oz. My second was smaller, 7lb9oz and fit 0000's for a few weeks.

My advice is this - to buy mostly 000's because even if bub is reeeally small when born, they will eventually reach 000. Buy enough 0000's for a couple of days, with #2, I had about 3 days worth of 0000's, and then I sent my mum and dh shopping for more. If you send your dh shopping, send specific written directions on what to buy, or send him with a sample - depending on his level of vagueness.

hehe. I rang the store and had things put aside so all he had to do was ask for them

    We only have a couple of 0000 items (2 target 0000 and 3 bonds 000). The rest is 000 and I think 3 or 4 00's.

Mostly 000's as I am 5'11" and hubby is 6'3". I was 68cm when born - yes I looked like a big red and white lacky band - so we are expecting a baby that is a little on the long side. Hubby was also born at 9 pound 11 ounces so if it takes after him it could be quite sizeable.

For the length reason we have tried to avoid too many items with build in feet and bought socks instead.

Oh Ray, THAT is a dh-proof solution!

Very clever, we needed that with long #1.

Also, if they're wearing stuff that's too big, you can roll up stuff a bit easier when there's no feet.

We bought a few of each... and DS was 7lb 70z and wore the 0000's for a good month or so. I just made sure I bought super cheap stuff for the 0000's in case I didn't get much use out of them. The Bonds nighties are awesome in terms of sizing - they're so simple that there's more margin for size variation to fit any size/width. He could actually still fit into 000's or even 0000's in the nighties at 4 months (and he was 7.6 KILOGRAMS by then!) and wearing 00's or 0's in the daytime!!!!

I must admit, I was all thumbs to start with and I found that using clothes that fit him a bit better was easier for a klutzy nervous first-time mum!

i got given tiny sizes by well meaning people (who had never had kids) so didn't buy any 00000 myself.

i spent my pregnancy buying 000 and 00 in opshops. mainly transeasonal, some summer, some winter. but all natural fibres. babies overheat easily, so i avoided synthetic stuff.

the sizes i bought more of, well my answer to that was, if you get to the stage where everything that fits your bub is
    - in the washing basket to be washed
    - waiting to dry
then you prolly need more of the current size.

i got more use out of two piece items, than the all in ones.
i got most use out of the things that did up easily, at the front. Hated the clothes that had back fastenings. anything awkward to do up - i ditched. did not have the energy to waste on badly designed stuff.

my bub arrived in a heatwave, so nappy, singlet and muslin wrap was all she really needed for first few months. i was unprepared with baby sunscreen and what to dress her in to make her sunsafe for that first summer. I now find out, it's unadvisable to take newborns out in the sun for first six months, so maybe it's a blessing that my PND was so bad, i didn't take her out anywhere anyhoo, (except for hospital visits we were driven to).

if you're having a July bub, a pram snug might be useful to you. it's like a blanket that zips onto the pram bit the baby lies in.

We were given bucketloads of hand-me-downs in 000's and 00's, DD was 8lb1oz born so she fit quite well into them (it was also the middle of winter so having clothes that little bit baggy helped insulate too, there was room for a singlet underneath etc). A couple of people gave us 0000's and they still have the tags on, she was just too big for them (very long and very fat bub, considering the four other bubs in hospital with us at the time were between 6lb and just under 8lb, she was the big fatty of the group lol ).
It's hard to know how big your bub will be, but I personally am erring on the side of caution with bub-to-be and am sticking with nothing smaller than 000, if she ends up being tiny and needs smaller clothes I'll just send DH and mum out to grab a few bits and pieces - it really doesn't matter much if their clothes are too big, you get heaps of use out of them, and it's a waste of money if they only fit a size for a week or two before getting too big for it.
I too was told that Bonds gear runs a bit small in the sizes, but then their stuff is pretty stretchy too so maybe that makes up for it? I never really noticed a difference, the main brands I put DD in were Bonds and Dymples.
And I didn't realise until she was a few months old that nobody else dresses their babies in those long-john like suits all day, every day - my friends were all dressing their 4-day-old babies in miniature jeans and polo shirts and frilly dresses for outings, meanwhile I was just taking DD out and about in her 'pyjamas' because I figured there was no point in buying fancy little clothes she was just going to grow out of soon!!

I would get minimal 0000 stuff until you know the size of bub...

Ash was a big baby and only fit in 000 for a few weeks! So all the 0000 stuff I brought never got used and the oversupply of things I had in 000 wasn't funny. Best to get a few of the essentials and spend up later when you know what size for what season.
