    Weight gain... or not?

    Hi Girls,

I've just weighed myself (again!) and I have not put on any weight at all during my first trimester.

I haven't had any vomitting - a combination of diarrhoea, constipation, nausea and food-fussiness but no vomitting...

Has anyone else not put on any weight during their first trimester?

I put on about 4 kilos in the first 12 weeks when I was pregnant with our DD...But a lot of that was fluid retention...

    Thanks,
    Lily

I wouldn't be worried about not gaining weight yet. The bub does the majority of it's growing (weight wise) in the third trimester.
It is still tiny so I wouldn't expect a weight gain.
Also you mention diarrhea, so you may have actually lost some weight and gained some without noticing.
If you are really worried check with your OB or Midwife at your next check up.

hehehe! I wish!! I put on 2 kilos the minute I got a positive POAS result!

I wouldn't worry too much darl, every pregnancy is different. I am sure once you are through the first tri you will start to put on weight.

No worries Lily! Good luck with the rest of your pg.

Thanks but it's not quite so beautiful in real life. Found my first stretchies this morning!

I've only put on a kilo (I think I have nausea to thank for that! ) and my OB assured me that was fine. I normally love food so I'm sure I'll make up for it once the nausea settles!!

I lost 3kg in my first trimester. It is nothing to worry about as long as you are generally eating healthy. I think with me, I was eating so much healthier that this is why I lost weight (that and general nausea for several weeks).

Don't worry - you'll surely put on plenty soon (I have!).

Thanks Tenar and Taurean - both of these posts have made me feel better. I wasn't aware that you could lose weight in your first trimester but it makes sense - especially if you're nauseas/vomitting and have been eating differently.
Thanks heaps and all the very best with the rest of your pregnancies!

I only put on a few kg through my pregnancy. At the end of my pregnancy, I had put on about 3 kg. I think I actually lost a bit of weight in first trimester though, due to having such horrible morning sickness. I think you willprobably be fine as long as you are eating well.

I lost weight in the first tri then started to put that lost weight back on from 12 weeks. I was back to pre pregnancy weight at 20 weeks then put on around 15 kgs over the next 18/4 weeks. No MS here either.

I haven't weighed myself lately (I hate scales lol!) but I'm guessing that I've put on 2-3kg already. But with my DD I didn't put on any weight until second tri. Every pg is different. Don't worry I'm sure it won't be long until your belly starts expanding!

    Hi Lily J
Don't worry at all. I'm not at 12 weeks yet (only in my 8th week) but I have actually lost 4 kgs. My dr said not to worry at all, and that as awful as it sounds, babies are the perfect parasite - they take what they need to grow - even if it's at your expense! That's how come even in developing countries babies are still born at an average weight of 7 pounds or so.
Just keep an eye on it and check in regularly with your ob. They'll tell you what you need to do.

    Hi Lily
Try not to worry. From 10 to 18 weeks I had no change in weight. I'm sure I lost a bit in first trimester too even though I was well for most of it - i think its just your body gearing up another level to grow bub. Even now at 25 weeks I would be surprised if I've put on any more than 1-2 kgs tops - all my clothes fit me everywhere but my growing belly. I'm not into weighing myself because its not really my thing (never owned scales in my life) and I don't think its a helpful indicator of how bub is growing - your fundal height is best for that (i.e.when the midwife measures your uterus).

I've had lots of people comment to me that I look thinner than i did pre-pregnancy - i want to slap them all around the head, but have just learnt to ignore them. I think its cos you start to grow out front everything looks a little different.

    Enjoy your pregnancy...take care

Another one here that had no weight gain in the first tri! I was the same weight at my 16wk check up as I was at my 10wk one. I have now gone on to lose 3kg to this point but everything is fine. As everyone else has said, try not to worry as it seems to very common!

8.5 weeks, and no weight gain as yet. I think for me I have probably lost muscle because I normally run a lot, but have had to top due to very low energy levels. I thought I would be packing it on with no running, but I am eating really healthy food, and doing other exercise, so I guess the weight gain is to come!

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the feedback - it certainly has put my mind at ease. I think I was just expecting to be huge straight away like I was with my first pregnancy... But feel different all round this time (the lack of fluid retention this time around makes such a huge difference to everything - emotionally and physically - it even affects the way I sleep!!! When I was pregnant with our DD everything was so swollen it literally hurt to lay down! )
Am almost 14 weeks and think I have put on 500gms (sometimes it's less on the scales - but I think it depends on when I weigh myself).
Anyway, not going to stress about it - you guys have all provided such wonderful insight - thanks so much again.
