Hi there,
I have horrible pregnancy sickness (read : hyperemesis), and I don't know what to do anymore.
I have thrown up practically every day since 6 weeks of pregnancy. I seem to be getting worse, not better the further along I get.
In the last 48 hours, I have kept nothing down apart from a very small amount of pasta and a few sips of water last night. I don't even attempt to eat before 1.30/2pm each day as I am so sick each morning. I have just brought my lunch and drink back up.
Most of the time, I am bringing up blood and bile. My throat is sore, and my voice has been affected. My teeth are destroyed. I am trying my hardest to be as positive as I can, but the last 2 days have been pretty horrific. I don't know who to talk to about this? I don't feel as if it's a medical emergency,as when I am not being sick, I feel alright.
I have low iron and am on tablets... but haven't taken any for 3 days because they won't stay down. I have tried both maxalon and zofran and neither have had any affect.
I am so worried about the damage this might be causing my body. I seem to get fobbed off quite a bit because I am coping so well.... but it's just that I put on a brave face all the time.
I don't want to call the midwives, because I am not in labour, and as I said earlier, I don't feel like this is an emergency and wouldn't want to hassle anyone. Is there anyone else I could call about this? I've got 12 weeks to go, and I'm just getting so worn down by all of this. It's affecting nearly every facet of my life.
Please, please, PLEASE ring your midwives. I will be very shocked if they fob you off. It is so important for you to be well and I'd be worried that you aren't hydrated enough. Dehydration is very dangerous, you need to be checked out. Please call them, don't downplay your symptoms, just state what your symptoms are and your concerns for yourself and your baby. Insist on coming in to be checked out if they don't sound too concerned, you need to stand up for yourself in a situation like this.
I'm so sorry you've been so sick, it sounds absolutely awful . Please ring your midwives now .
I'm so sorry you are going through this, it sounds like you have had a very tough pregnancy. I would definately ring the hospital and speak to a midwife, they really wont mind, if you have only kept down a few sips of water you may well be dehydrated and need to be put on a drip. Wishing you all the best.
Thanks for your replies. I went to hospital a few weeks ago for the same thing, and I apparently wasn't dehydrated.
I will look for a number to call and at least they can tell me to bugger off if they think I'm a drama queen.
The midwives are there to care for you throughout your pregnancy, not just in labour. Use them! They probably get calls all the time from pregnant women worried about little niggles and things, I'm sure they'll actually take your call seriously!
Aw Nick, you poor poor thing. Please call the midwives. I was given Phenergan the whole way through my pregnancy with Tom as nothing else worked. It's very strange as it is a allergy-type medication. I think it worked because it knocked me out so I couldn't spew but that probably won't be any good for you with Lach. Sending you lots of hugs xx
* I think we posted at the same time. Good girl for calling them. Let us know how you go
Go see or ring them. Please. I was admitted with DD1 on a drip once for 4 days & twice with DD2 for a week at a time.
It may not help you feel better, but it will give you a bit of rest & rehydrate you, which is the most important.
Try sucking on ice if you can keep it down, I couldn't keep water down for long. I did force myself to eat in the hope that not everything would come back up. Sometimes I'd only have a mouthful, run to the bathroom, then I could have a bit & keep it down.
Have you tried dry crackers? Sao's? I ate cheese flavoured Jatz alot. Iceblocks? Grapes?
I had hyperemesis & was throwing up around 13 - 17 times a day. Those are some of the things I kept down most of the time.
I hope you feel better soon hun
If you know your pre-pregnancy weight, check what it is now. The more you lose, the more concerned they should become.
There is IV anti-nausea medication they can give you with nourishment. Definitely don't let them fob you off if you are suffering this horribly. I can assure you, letting HG of that magnitude go through all the way untreated is not the end result you will want.
I've been vomiting almost every day (about every 2nd day) since 7 weeks and it is a total pain in the backside. My teeth too are totally shot and I have so much stomach acid that I burn my throat bringing up my breakfast. I DETEST public transport now (I don't drive) as it makes me motion sick in the mornings too. Argh!
You poor thing.
In regards to the blood, my GP said it is normal to vomit blood when you have been vomiting alot (as it stresses the tummy lining and throat) as long as it is not ONLY blood.
I have found Ural works a lot to stop the churning sick feeling and sometimes will stop me vomiting. Tums also help a little but rarely. At least it's worth a try. Very, very plain food too...in small amounts.
I know how you feel - once I have vomited I feel fine and look alive again. It's the nausea and vomiting but that screws up the days!
Hang in there and see midwife/doctor just in case.
You're not alone. Together we can find a good use for plastic bags. (my handbag is full of them!)
Niadla: I know exactly how you feel, hon. I have hyperemesis too and the only thing which worked for me (after trying Zofran and Maxolon and everything else they could throw at me) was steroids. If you are not keeping anything down, I'd call your hospital as I was the same as you and didn't want to "cause a fuss" not realising that I was going into liver failure.
sounds Awful what you are going through you poor thing. Can you see a natropath? I took some Vit B drops from my natropath that worked very well. They might just have some other things for you as well. Good luck xo
Nialda listen to me Go a see you're midwife, you poor thing it needs to get sorted out. So go on off ya go. and btw yes it is an emergency youve not been getting better so it counts
Hi there,
Thanks everyone for your replies.
I was admitted to hospital Thrusday night for 3 drips along with some IV drugs for the sickness. I wasn't very well at all by the time I reached the hospital, but bubs has been perfectly fine the whole time which is a releif.
Thank you all for your advice and support.
Thats wonderful news, Naidla. Both that baby is well, and you have been given som vital nutrients for your own sake. Hopefully they will take the situation a little more seriously in future too and you don't need to be stressed about it any more.
