    Night time toilet training

DD is nearly 3.5 and there is no sign of being toilet trained for night time. Daytime she is excellent but every morning she wakes up soaked.

Some ppl have told to get her up at 10pm to go to the loo. Others have told me to stop giving her fluids past 6pm.

Any advice to encourage night training or do I just wait?

She reluctantly wears a nappy at night.

    Hi Bek
I think it is pretty much a waiting game. When they wake up dry in the morning is when to take that next step. I know of so many 5 year olds who still wear nappies/pull ups at night. I guess if you're in a hurry for it to happen you could try waking her up and taking her to the toilet.

We've bitten the bullet tonight and DS is asleep in undies. He had a day sleep in undies today and really responded to the oodles of praise he received for waking up dry and eventually going to the toilet.

He reckons he won't wet the bed tonight.. but we'll see how we go. I guess it all depends if he's weeing in his sleep or if he's weeing once he's up. Anyway, we're leaving the bathroom light on for him so he can go to the toilet if he needs to.

I have a waterproof mattress protector on his bed, and DD's bed is made up too (she's in our bed atm) so if he does wet through the night I don't have to change sheets or anything, I'll just put him in her bed for the rest of the night. I think a lot of the reluctance to night train is on my side, coz I'm too lazy to change the sheets all the time LOL. Plus he's in a top bunk and it's so hard making that bed.. i don't want to be doing it every day!

Anyway.. will see how we go

Bek, our DD trained herself at night, despite waking up every morning in wet pull ups. She was probably about 3 when we realised she'd been getting up during the night to go to the toilet and we hadn't known! We hadn't pushed the issue because DS was only a few months old and I didn't need another reason to be getting up at night. So from that day on, no more nappy to bed. She probably had a week of an accident here and there and that was it, she's never looked back.

So I don't really subscribe to the 'once they wake up in the morning dry' theory because she didn't and still managed it all on her own.

    Well, we woke up dry

Admittedly it was a late night coz we went out, so he went to the toilet about 11pm before going to sleep, but still, being able to praise him for waking up dry this morning was a big step in the right direction! It was a battle getting him to go to the toilet tho this morning... he just refuses to go. Argh. He did eventually, but it's not a nice start to the morning.. I want him going to the loo before getting into our bed.

Anyway... will try again tonight I guess, from about 7.30!

My next step was to buy some of those bed overlays and take off her nappy and see if that works. Sara is such a heavy sleeper that it is really hard to wake her up and I think this may be delaying her night training. I guess I have been reluctant to night train because Loren has only just started sleeping better at night and of course I have #3 due in July so I am loving my sleep atm.

Sara is completely nappy free throughout the day including sleeps (not that she has those anymore) but it has been this way for 12 months now, so surely she should be night trained by now.

JaZ - I have a couple of friends with 5yo in night nappies, I so hope Sara trains before that.

This is my prob too. I have DS 4 and DD 3 both still in night nappies . I make them go to the toilet before I put their nappies on but they wake up wet.
Good idea with the pull ups though might get them next that way I can plant the thought in their head to maybe get up to take themselves to the toilet.

BekZ - do you think she's lazy when she has the nappy on? I know for a fact that DS is lazy with a nappy, coz he even asks me if he's in a nappy or undies, so he knows where he can do his wee LOL. Which is one of the reasons I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go. Geared myself to be stripping the bed each day for a bit. I'm not one to push the issue tho, if he keeps wetting, I'll just stick him back in a nappy at night for a while.

Liz - She was lazy with day training and asked me to put nappies on her from time to time just so she didn't need to go to the loo. She slept at my dad's place the other night and they forgot to put a nappy on her. She woke up at normal time soaked and wasn't bothered by it at all. I think I may bite the bullet and take off the nappy. I think she needs to feel wet to understand.

BTW DD won't wear pull ups!!!! She hates them

Gosh...im surprised at how young you guys start them....my DD#1 was prob nearing 4 when i thought i want her out of nappies by time school starts (she turned 5 in the Sept.). We did it one night, and havent looked back. She has never wet the bed since.
Personally....i will be doing DD#2 at this age too. ATM we dont wear a nappy in the day, but im finding she picks and chooses whether she wants to do a poo in the toilet, or in her knickers. Im getting over that hurdle first. But no way will i be starting night time toilet training till she is nearer to 4.....i think im the same as Liz...heavily pregnant, not sleeping great ATM anyway, i couldnt bare to wake up to having to change bed sheets at 4am....

My DD2 will be 4 in June. She isn't even close & I'm not pushing her yet. DD1 was 3 & 4 months when we forgot to put a nappy on her & she woke up dry.
I've tried 3 times so far with DD2, here & there, but she wakes up drenched every time, so I'm waiting a bit longer before I try again.

MBear - I am not heavily pregnant but I am getting there and I really don't want to get up to change sheets either. Good to know that Sara is normal. I have a few friends and family memebers who's kids are already night trained and they are slightly younger so I felt like Sara was behind.

Maybe I should just wait till after winter. I also hate the thought of her wetting the doonah as well.

Hun I have a friend who's DD was only just 2 & my neice was only about 2.5, so I feel like we are waaaay behind too, but, they both only had one at the time & their DD's were just lucky I guess.
I'm not as worried about being behind as I used to be. They all do different things at different times
