    Sling for big baby

DS is a pretty big bubba at 8kg and i would really like a sling that is not too expensive and good for a big bubba. I have a bad back so i need something supportive in the back department. DS also likes to be facing outwards.

Any advice on a good sling for the above??

    Thanks

I loved my Hug a Bub for the back support, but they can be quite expensive (however we didn't buy a stroller for so long because we used it that I think it saved us money!). But I have heard of girls who've made a version themselves, although getting the right material can be tricky.

It definitely fits your criteria for the back support and you are able to face bub inwards or outwards.

As bub is getting bigger a woven wrap would work well, if you like wraps, or a Mai tai wold work to, I carry my bub in a Mai tai all the time and she is just under 8 kilos, I also use an ergo and love it. If you are realy interested in carrying bub google baby carriers down under. They are a helpful group of people who carry there kids alot.

Thanks for the advice. I have been looking around at different carriers and i like the look of the slings the best but im not sure if they would hurt my back and shoulders too much. I have been looking at the ergo which i like, can you use it to carry bubs on your hip?? i know with that one you cant face out but the hip carrier might work instead. DS tends to throw his weight back at the moment too when sitting on your hip so im worried that he would fall out of a hip carrier, would a sling or ergo be better for this?Does anyone know approx how much the ergo is?? How long did people use their ergo and what weight do they go up to? Has anyone with back problems used a sling and which one? Sorry for all the questions but there is so much choice out there and i want to make the right decision as this will be our second sling and DH wont appreciate me wanting to get a third ha ha!

    Hi

You can use the hip carry with the Ergo. I have found that since its a structured carrier, its more supportive when Miss M flings herself back, than say, if she's in my sling. Plus, if I carry her in my sling for a while, it starts hurting my back. My Ergo never hurts.

If you want to know more about prices of the Ergo, feel free to PM me for further details.

    Hi Isabel,

I have an ergo and even though it says can be used on hip is uncumfy, I use either my mai tai or ring sling for hip carries. Myabe you should join baby carriers down under and accsess there loaner carriers and figure out what suits you. Then by what works. I actually own 5 carriers.

If you have a bad back, facing outwards and hip carry both will put more strain on your back. Ideally, a two shouldered front or back carry will provide your back with the most support, as the weight is supported evenly. A facing outwards carry will pull forwards on your shoulders, and a hip carry puts more weight on one shoulder and throws the spine and hip out of alignment.

However, there is a really good hip carrier designed for toddlers - the Scootababy. It has a similar structured waist to the Ergo, and a very comfortable Windpro shoulder. My bub is 17 months, extremely tall and about 11.5 - 12kg, and I have a bad back and shoulders. I have carried him for hours at a time without discomfort, but I find a good woven wrap or my wrap converted Mei Tai to be the most supportive for extended wearing.

An Ergo may suit you (they do not suit all people, I have narrow shoulders and never found the Ergo comfortable). If you are looking into Mei Tais, different makes are more suitable for older babies (eg: Kozy) - they use more supportive fabrics, or padded or structured waistbands and have taller bodies, whereas some are more suited for smaller babies.

If your bub likes looking out, perhaps he will like a high back carry in a mei tai or wrap, where he can see over your shoulder.

ETA: I wouldn't recommend a pouch - they are not the most supportive for people with bad backs.

I think i might go for either the peanut shell or the ergo. Can anyone who has used these two carriers give me some reviews on them??
