Just wondering if anyone can tell me whether the baby getting hiccups has any significance with lung development. The baby has just been getting hiccups more often - I'm 31wks. This baby is likely to be prem so just wondering if hiccups is a positive sign in relation to lung development.
Hi,
Ds always had hiccups during my pregnancy and still gets them now! all the time.
I'm sorry i can't really answer your question, but i hope some one on here can help you!
good luck, i hope everything goes well!
I think they are definately related to bub's getting practice for breathing!
My DS had heaps of hiccups and was also expected to come early. He ended up not coming unitl 36 weeks but was only 1.6 kg (3lb 10oz). We also had a few shots of the steroids to ripen his lungs just in case, as he needed heart surgery when he was born and we didnt want immature lungs as well.
His lungs were great when he was born, never had a problem with them which was a Godsend.
Hiccups come from practice breathing and drinking amniotic fluid. I don't think (although I don't know this) they are a sign of good lung development. I know you are looking for reassurance, but I wouldn't read too much into it.
DD had the hiccups sooo much and still did after she was born. This baby doesn't have the hiccups at all... Not yet anyway.
I asked my OB on Friday about it and he said it has to do with the diaphram and not the lungs. But said it was still a good sign (think he was just saying that to make me happy)
DD always got the hiccups when i was pregnant also - she still gets them a fair bit but all is fine with her - however i did hear that it could be a sign of a reflux baby and she did have reflux but im thinking that might be one of those old wife's tales!
I went to a sleep settling info session run by our loacl council on wednesday and we were told Hiccups are a tired sign for bubs.
As to whether that can be related to inside the tummy also i really don't know. Both my boys got hiccups during pregnancy and i always assumed it was a natural thing.
I don't know what it means in terms of lung development, but my DS got hiccups a lot when I was pregnant, and now still gets them about once a day! It's all good though... he's healthy, no reflux and the hiccups don't seem to bother him.
I have to say that I doubt that hiccups are a tired sign. It was always very obvious when DD was tired. And hiccupps occurred at other times. It might be true for some babies, but it doesn't sound right as a generalisation.
