Smile Deciding to VBAC at FMC

    Hi all..

I am new to BellyBelly.com forums and this is my first post. Just thought I would stop and say I am 19wks pregnant and thinking about VBACing at Flinders Medical Center. It will be a public birth and am seeing midwives at Noarlunga Hospital up until decision time of either an Elect C-section or a VBAC.

I would like to have a Doula with me if I decide to VBAC but my husband is not sure of this. Hubby also thinks it is safer for me to have a c/s, however he hasn't been the one reading up on any of this to know what is safe or not. I am trying to get him 'up to date' with all the imformation so he can be aware of what is safe and what's not with either options.

Has anyone had a doula for their birth regardless of how the birth ended up?

    Would be good to hear
    Tammy

    Hi Tammy,
I hired an independant midwife for my VBAC. Having her there made a huge difference for me. I was able to relax and allow my body to labor without worrying about the hospital staff. I would reccomend an independant midwife or doula I think they are worth the money you pay.
I took my hubby to an info session on homebirth/independant midwifes/VBAC etc. It was run by a group of independant midwifes. I didn't choose homebirth but the info session had a HUGE impact og my hubby. He was able to hear from professionals about how safe VBAC is and ask questions. He didn't really want to go to the info session but got so much out of it. After the info session and me explaining just how important it was for me to try for a VBAC he was 100% supportive.

ANyway thaught I might give u a few hints on how I won hubby over. :O) Good luck~

    Thanks for the reply!
It seems hubby isn't wanting anyone else in the room but him. Hopefully the sound of 'Independent Midwife' sounds better for him than 'Doula'.

I got stuck at 9cm and ended up with my second CS. How far between CS and VBAC is recommended? I REALLY want a VBAC next time and want to know how long to wait before TTC again to give me the best chance.

    Hi Tammy,

I am planning my VBAC at WCH... not long to go for me.

I am having my private OB (from my previous birth) and my sister who is acting as my Doula and my hubby. For our first birth we didnt want anyone else appart from each other and the OB BUT for this one I want my sis as she has had four great VB's (biggest bub for her was 5.5kg!!) and my husband is happy to support me in whatever I feel I need. I also think my sisters role is as a support for my DH as he will be needing breaks etc.

Maybe once you start writing your Birth Plan (we have called ours Birth Preferences as I dont think you can plan these things really...) he might be clearer on a Doulas role? And see how having an additional person to support the both of you would be useful. If you want to see a copy of ours just let me know.

How are you going with FMC? We live down south too but are going to go back to WCH as we have a long history there. Are you doing the "Mums on the Move" physio class at Noarlunga too? They are great.

Joey123, it is usually reccommended that the gap between CS and VBAC is at least 18 months but that will depend on your hospt or Dr's policy so best to check.

hi try2vbac and casazbubz, Im also in the south and had my first bub via cs at FMC, I am TTC no 2 very soon and have been looking into having a VBAC at FMC, can I ask how they have taken this? are they very supportive of it? from the info I have been reading they dont have a very high success rate... but anyway, there is an independant MW by the name of Lisa barret, she has a blog called a midwife mutiny (I think?) she is very supportive of VBAC and my MCHN at the seaford clinic told me about her and fantastic she is. When it is time I will definitely be giving her a call in regards to either having herself or if she can reccommend someone. Im pretty sure she has her pricing packages on her website.
I am also thinking about the doula option, im pretty sure there is a mw/doula organisation for onkaparinga or something like that around here..will try to find the info for you..

they are failry supportive of vbac depending on your reasons for cs. i read somewhere that lisa cost nearly $4000. not sure how true that is but there is no way i could afford that.
i am going public for the reasons of not being able to afford private care at the moment.
i wouldnt even be able to afford $1000.
i think the private hiring option is probably out for me unless there are some government funded ones, or if its cheaper on concession or something
i was allowed to try for vbac but didnt progress after 10hrs so had cs.

yeah, i had heard she was around $5000, But that she does payment plans and you can just have her for the birth which would cut the cost a bit....
Im glad they are supportive, Im a bit worried about that to be honest, I was induced and laboured for 10 hours before the cs, due to failure to progress, bub was fine, was really no reason for it other than that he didnt want to come yet!
I have sorta thought that when we do get UTD again and its time to go to hossy, I will try to labour at home as much as possible, before going in. Have they given you any rules for labour? or inductions or anything? sorry for the twenty questions, Im very interested in how you go about it!
