Clothing ideas for family photos?

We are booked in for Pixifotos on Saturday (me, DH, DS1-2.5 and DS2-6weeks) and I'm looking for ideas of what to wear (all of us) for the family shot and for the boys for their sibling shots? The studio recommended dark/bright/strong colours but not sure about combinations? Any ideas? We are all really fair skinned so white shirts/tshirts don't look great on us

Something neutral that won't date too much - ie black shirts and jeans.
Stripes can come out funny in photos especially if they are close together so I would avoid them unless it's a bumblebee outfit.
Don't wear anything you wouldn't normally wear - you want to be comfortable and you want to be you.
If DS1 has a favourite outfit or costume it might be nice to let him wear it.

all wear a differnt bright colour! or all the same. I think if some were the same, some were different it would look weird.

I've already told DH if Spock is a boy I am getting a photo of them wearing the same outfit =P he isn't very impressed, but it was in the marriage and baby vows so he is stuck.


for something different... My parents did this and it is fantastic (even though these days you can fake it, BUT...) we have photos taken of us, holding photos of us when were younger. eg. (i know your kids arent this age but as an example) I have a photo of when i was 20 holding a photo of me when i was 10 holding a photo of me when i was 5 holding a photo of me when i was 0. It looks fantastic!! (4 is about as deep as you can go) but you can do any age combos you want. and its never too soon to start! =)

I know that doesnt help you on the outfit...but might with poses =)

Something that goes together, like in the same colour range and compliments eachother. Like if you were able to put on all the clothes on one person you would match. But nothing that is too matchy matchy!!

Onyx - that's hilarious! My DH has found some really funny nude family photos and jokes that would solve the clothing problem.

Definitely can't do white (we've tried in prev photos, we look terrible) not sure about black either? The main backdrops are black and white? I thought maybe blues (different shades) for the boys and purple for me? I've got matching navy bonds signature singlets for the boy's sibling shots and I'm not sure what to put DS2 in for his "baby" photo? Maybe just a bonds suit like ds1 wore for his?

I had some done with my kids and put them in their fav colours, pink, purple and green. The photos look great, they will probably as you to be in bare feet so keep that in mind.

Ooh, I like that idea probably have lots in those colours too.

Maybe DH and DS1 in a navy polo and jeans (we have those) , a navy top and jeans with a red necklace/beads for me and DS2 has some cute max and tilly navy overalls with a little red pic on the front, worn with a red onesie underneath?

We had some done in a garden recently. I didn't specifically match colours just a general match. That doesn't really make sense. I'll describe what we wore & if I can link a pic I will.
DH wore a pale blue shirt with black shorts, DS wore a blue & white checked shirt with denim shorts, I wore a maxi dress. The base colour was beige & it had a pattern with aqua, black & brown. DD had two outfits, one was a Christmas outfit because I wanted some pics of the kids for christmas. The other was an aqua pettiskirt with a black crochet boob tube & head band. I also gave her a black & silver necklace to play with (just from Diva). Even though all the colours were different, they also matched with the blue/aqua in everyones outfits, & black in most outfits too.

when we had them done a couple of years ago we dressed in what suited us personally - everyone in jeans then DD1 had a soft but still strong (ITMS) blue tshirt, DD2's was a very strong and bright pink, I was in a sapphire blue and DH in red. The colours looked fine together, but best of all was the effect they had on your own facial colouring, eyes etc. We also took fairy dresses for the girls to change into so there are photos of them "properly" dressed, and then cute dress up photos.

We did a couple of different looks (with another studio):
One was formal DH in a blue shirt & slacks, I was in a floral dress and DD was in a bright fushia dress - this one looked the best in photos
Next look was a white shirts/t-shirts and denim jeans (DD had a denim skirt) - looked the least favourable
And the last look was more smart casual - I wore black 3/4 pants and a silk bold floral print top, DH wore a black shirt and black denim jeans. I can't remember what I wore. - Was ok

You said you're really pale, so don't do dark colours.

we have a pixiphoto family shot. Dh and I wore jeans (different colour denim). I wore a medium-tone olive green shirt with sleeves, dh wore a more beige toned shirt. Ds was 8 months, he wore beige corduroy pants and a dusty blue sweater with a light blue shirt collar.

All the colours were sort of muted, medium tones that were neither too dark nor too light. All those colours were complimentary to our skin tones.

We didn't look like a ridiculous family all dressed in matching costumes, but the overall theme of jeans, shirts and muted tones was very harmonious and looked excellent against a white backdrop.

I would recommend you all wear the same style and colour tones/shades. However if you all wear the same colour (eg. all in black or white) your bodies will blend together, so I would avoid that.

I always find dressing to suit your house helps too. For example if you plan on putting the photos in the lounge room and your colour palette in the lounge room is black and silver, then I would wear shades of grey, black and white. IYKWIM. You wouldn't want everyone in pink, it would look out of place.

As someone mentioned above blue's are great. Especially when mixed with white and little red.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone! We have two sets of outfits for the family shots picked out. A navy/red theme and a "shades of blue" theme. Both worn with jeans for all of us - except DS2 in the navy/red theme. We are going to take both and see how they go. I put some pics in an album here They aren't great pics (and I forgot to rotate ) but you get the general idea. My DH thinks the navy/red is a bit "cheesy" so we'll see how it looks in the pics?

I'll be happy if we get one good family shot, one good sibling shot and two or three of DS2

I have a colour thingy on pinterest, will find it for you on my lappy in the morning! It's really good and goes through tones and c olours so you aren't all matchy matchy but complement each other! Back in the am!
