Canon 1000D vs Canon 550D

I am having trouble deciding which camera to get!!

I know that the 550D has about 8 more MP than the 1000D (and also HD Video, which I'm not fussed on) but am wondering if it's beneficial? (and worth spending a bit extra on)
I will be taking shots mainly of the kids and we live by the beach, so some scenery ones too. I won't be blowing any up gigantor size or anything. So am wondering if the 1000D will be fine with a 50mm macro lense to get some gorgeous shots?!

I am very open to all opinions, I am wanting to buy one in the next week. So hit me with the good and the bad

Edit- This is my first DSLR, so anything will be an improvement on my ole point and shoot

I have the Cannon EOS 450D (no video) and I LOVE it. Canon's take beautiful photo's.

You need to go to a site called dprieview and do a comparison search on the two cameras.

Also these days megapixels mean hardly anything. It's important but don't choose a camera based on only that! You want better features such as increased ISO capabilities for photographing in low light conditions or more focal points etc

From what I have just seen in a quick google search, the 550D has a lot better features but I just don't know if the extra $$ is justified being a learner. Plus, I really have no idea about anything right now. I'm SUCH a beginner

My honest opinion...if you can afford the better camera then do it. So many times I hear of people buying a cheaper camera because they are a beginner and then upgrading it in 12 months because they become frustrated with it.

If you can see them IRL and hold and compare where the manual control are do it. Go to a camera store and ask where you change the ISO, aperture and shutterspeed!

Ok great, thanks Raven! I guess that is what I was looking for, a bit of a push The 550D is very much stretching the budget but from looking around this morning there are some pretty good deals. Will go and check them out tomorrow.

Also, there are a few twin lens kit deals around. A few people have told me that they really don't use the 2nd lens. So in your opinion Sam, do you think I should just stick with a 18-55 IS lens that generally comes with the camera and then getting a 50mm?

I'm a beginner with a 550d and I have the 50mm 1.8. You won't be disappointed with that combo. A 550d will be good to learn with, I can vouch for that. Then, as you get better, you upgrade your lenses.

My aim as I get better Is a 100mm macro, an 85mm prime and I 'think' 24 - 70mm zoom.... In the L series.... So more professional. THEN one day, I'm going to get myself the 5D mark ii or by the time I get it, the mark iii!

I'm looking at buying the Kiss X4 off a website, but as it says its the Japanese version, I'm now worrying that the instructions and everything are going to be in Japanese! Please say yours came with english instructions and the stuff on the camera is in englsih (like the dials, and buttons and stuff, lol)
other than that, how do you find it?
