how to aproach Pead about SPD. not sure how to ask for testing

thursday im seeing our pead to assess dds behaviour . I have made a list of the things she does and am taking it with me ( its quite long so i wont post all of it ) BUT what id like to know is how do i bring it up ?
what do i say to the pead ? i dont want him thinking im a know it all and just attention grabbing and on the other hand i dont want him to think i dont know what im talking about .

i know sensory disorders and the like are not to be taken lightly , so i want to say the right thing so i dont get dismisses ( i know my pead is a good , but i think my own anxieties are coming through by not being taken seriously, kwim?)

ive never had to talk to a pead about this stuff before so i need help from other parents on how to broach the subject .

here is a list of a few of her behaviours :
    • Tips sugar/flour/ cereal over the floor and stomps or rols in it.
    • Spins
    • Will stand with her wrists running water for long periods of time
    • Lies in bath with head under water
    • Jumps on beds /lounges
    • Throws self on ground . loves to fall or tumble on to grass
    • Puts things in her nouth
    • Eats things like crayons , chalk , soaps
    • Likes to smear spilt foods , or spills food/drink to then smear table with it
    • If food is not nice or too hot or not cold , she will spit it on the floor , in the cup holder in the lounge .
    • Food always has to be cold
    • Will not eat if dinner is late of its not what she wants or if food is too hot
    • Slams things and is rough with them
    • Wants to break things and even asks to break things
    • Sits and stares and wont lay down if she wakes , if you try to lay her down she tantrums.
    • Wil only wer certain clothes
    • Barely eats and doesn’t seem to be hungry , one or 2 bites and shes done .
    • Pinches and scratches hard if we say no.
    • Smacking or yelling does not seem to make a difference
    • Has jerky hands when in the car . or when sitting .
    • Doesn’t stop moving ,, swings legs , rocks her body
. becomes hyper in places like shopping centres . escapes from trollies and prams.
. gets out of car seats and just runs . not looking or sensing danger
    • Likes to run and run, never walks camly .

this is just a short version . i have the checklist of SPD and marked all the ones dd does .
do i just walk in there and say " i think DD has a SPD " or " i think theres a problem with DD's Behaviour"

tia for your advice on what to say . im really nervous about this . and i dont want to leave with out any testing , or on the other hand unneccessary testing ..

    thanks

I would take the list in with you and just say, look I'm worried/concerned about these behaviours and hand it over, while he's reading say that you've done some research on SPD and wondered if that was it.

I would also ask for a referral to an OT who can diagnose SPD through a sensory profile

    Hope that helps x

If you can find SPD information online which you could print out it would be helpful. There's a test you can do... I will see if I can find it & PM you...

I find its better to go armed with information. I went to one paed, after moving from Brissy & was referred to him as he dealth with ASD (Autism spectrum) and behavioural issues. I came with all my information & he said he wasn't sure if there was SPD... *groan* He wouldn't even look at my info. I hope and pray that your paed listens to you.

oh christy that must have felt frustrating . thats what im scared of, not being listend to . he is ipswichs pead of choice and has a great rep , hes been gabbis pead since 7mths he knows her and last appt i brought up the eating crayons and chalk . and he said if she doensnt grow out of it he will look into it . so hopefully it goes well . a neighbour of mine took her dd there and he picked up ADHD and anxiety in her relatively quickly and now the dd is doing so much better . i have no doubts in him really , only in myself , that im over reacting or theres something worse there
