Hi, I really would appreciate some advice about my situation with my baby girl who is now 4 weeks old. She was born at 35 weeks and spent 1 week in special care nursery due to some minor breastfeeding difficulties. While in special care, one of the nurses noted she was twitching in her sleep. She said it would be observed, and no one mentioned it again while we were at hospital. At home I noticed she does twitch during her sleep sometimes quite regularly and it can look similar to an epileptic fit.
I researched this and found the condition 'benign neonatal sleep myoclonus', it sounds exactly like what my baby has and people have posted clips of babies with this condition and it looks exactly like what she does. BNSM is a benign sleep condition which is basically myoclonic jerks that only occur during sleep, it is often mistaken for epilepsy but it is a benign condition that does not require any treatment and is not a neurological problem.
I spoke about this with my child health nurse (whom I really do trust she has more than 30 years experience) and she said as baby is developing well and has no other issues she wouldn't pursue testing.
So basically, I'm torn between listening to her, but a little part of me wonders should I have it tested. I hate the thought of putting her through unnecessary invasive testing and I read several I cases where doctors put babies with this condition on medication when it is not necessary.
Any thoughts? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
