    First Name Help Please

Hi there. DH and I are struggling to pick a name as we have VERY different tastes. We have some time yet but I thought I'd ask for help sooner rather than later.

My mom died when I was little and I'd love to use her name Laura, but DH has a small family with only two cousins and one of his cousins names is Laura. She didn't have a problem but my DH says it's 'taken". So we decided we would use Laura as a middle name for a girl and Laurance for a middle name for a boy. The trouble is finding a first name to go nicely.

For a girl we both like the name Paige but Paige Laura just doesn't really go. We also like the name Nola but Nola Laura sounds even worse. I thought of naming her Laura Paige and then using her middle name but DH thinks that's weird.

For boys my DH is in love with the name Duncan but I'm not that keen. He gave me a small list of names and the only one I liked was Ian which is just ok, though it doesn't sound that bad with Laurance.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Our last name has 5 syllables and 14 letters (starting with Con) so DH is dead set on shorter names.

i think duncan laurence sounds great.

as for girls.. hmmm would you feel comfortable changing the name to lauren? then that could be a first name also.

i'm sure the other BB girls will come up with some great combinations though.

I *love* Duncan, and I think Duncan Laurence sounds great.

Would you consider Lauren - Paige Lauren sounds nice (though I think Paige Laura sounds fine as well)

I really like the names you have.

Thanks so much for all your great suggestions. My DH will be THRILLED that you all like the name Duncan. I am going to see if i can get it to grow on me a little. It would make him so happy.

Paige Lauren does sound a lot better than Paige Laura, I will see what DH says.

I love some of the suggested names (Annabel, Evelyn, Eden, Sadie, Amelia, Eleanor, Jacob, Oscar, Edward, James) I will have to run them by DH but I can already hear him "nooooo I like Duncan" LOL.

Ridley? Seriously? I think Dylan is a lovely name, for a girl or a boy it also sounds nice with Laura or Laurence.

Other variations of Laura are Laurel or Lori.

Most definitely put LAURA as a middle name ... if you don't use Laura at all or even alternate the name you may very well regret it in the future.

I wanted to name my only child a girl, her middle name after my much loved sister and i almost looked at an alternative but as my DP & i agreed if we are to name her after someone who means the world to us & we greatly love than why change the spelling of the name because that special person has one name spelt one way and it's ' their ' name ... so i am so very glad i never changed the spelling or alternated the name anyway as i feel it wouldn't have the same or felt as special when it's actually the person you want to name your child after (hope that all made sense ).

The name Laura is incredibly important to you and there is a world out there full of names to be your DD's first name ... but there is only one Laura as a middle name ... so in saying that you will find a first name to go with Laura

I think to use the name Laura as a first name might be a little strange but that's just me ... but as a middle name most certainly.

Have you considered both Laura Paige as middle names (my DD has two middle names but then her surname is a short) but would it bother you seeing your surname is a long one ??

I think the first name would look better with no more than 5 letters.

    Adele Laura
    Elise Laura
    Erin Laura

... i like Brooklyn's suggestions of Brea (Bree) and Shae .... and Feebs' suggestion of Nina

Yeah good point about regrets later. We gave our DS the middle name of Michael after DH's favourite uncle who passed away. His real name was Mihai (Romanian) but he changed it to Mike when he moved to Canada, and now we kind of wish we'd gone with his real name (more unique and meaningful)

Because our last name is so long DH wants first and middle names to be short (he agrees with 5 letters or less) and though I don't mind 2 middle names he thinks that is just too much. I LOVE the name Elise but DH does not.

Ugh, why is this so hard?
