How would you pronounce this?

Hi everyone,

I found this name and I am madly in love with it...Cybele.

Can you please tell me how you would pronounce it?
We are trying to see if it will get butchered -or not.. also would love suggestion for a middle name... Our surname starts with P and is only 2 syllables.

I'd pronounce it the same way as Cybill.

Either Sigh-Bee-Lee or Chi-Bee-Lee. BUT I think you'd want to watch out cos there could be a tendency for cruel kiddies to say Sigh-Belly. No one really wants Belly in their name.

ETA if you want it to sound like Cybill then maybe add another L so you get the "belle" sound at the end: "Cybelle"

What I am going for is Sah-Belle but I don't really like the spelling of Cybelle as much...plus a couple of our friends have Belle as their little girl's middle name and wouldn't want to upset them by "stealing" the name either..am I going mental? DH believes so lol!

I was a bit confused... at first I thought "the same as Cybill" but then pronounciation rules seemed to suggest that I should be saying "sigh be lee" . If you want it to end with a "belle" sound then I think 2 Ls are needed. Bele doesn't sound like "belle" in English. You could try Cybel? An "e" on the end of a word extends the sound of the precedeing vowel.

I definitely would if it were Cybelle. It's so pretty. My sister went to school with a Sybelle (I forget exactly how it was spelled, but was with an S, I think) So pretty.

We called our daughter Cybelle, born 9 Feb 08.
We also were torn between the different spellings, I first favoured the other spelling but decided to go with the extra L because they are actually different names. Cybele should theoretically be pronounced si-bel-ee, whereas our daughter is si-belle. I'm now glad for the extra L and think longer names are often prettier.
We've had a great reaction to the name and no-one seems to get it wrong. We call her Belly B as a nickname.

First glance ... and then second glance ... i pronounced it as " Sigh - Bell "

OMG, i so hope i haven't got it wrong ... my own daughter has a name that gets said a little different and it truely doesn't bother me as it thankfully doesn't happen often

thanks ladies, I think if I was to call her Cybele, I would put an accent on it ( as I am French Canadian originally) but my DH keeps reminding me that most Aussies will call her Sybill or won't know what to do with an accent, so I think we might end up going with Cybelle if we do. I just love that name.

Si-Belle (which is what I want)
A lot of people say Sy-bil

I just like the Cybele spelling so much better but don't want to cause unending trauma for my little bub...you know, MUM, why can't they get my name right? My maiden last name has caused me grief ( I've survived) all my life by people not being able to spell it right...just want to make sure I don't do it on purpose.
