    mei tai and spinal compression?

    Hi,

I've been pretty sure about my decision to get a babyhawk mei tai carrier for my baby due in december but after reading the sticky on spinal compression I'm not so sure. I don't know any of the brands or types mentioned in the sticky so I can't compare it to the mei tai. The article it links to says any upright position before 4-5 months can cause spinal compression, and the mei tai is upright so is this not ok?

I was interested in the mei tai because I've only ever heard rave reviews of it in terms of comfort for both baby and mom plus I like how they look. I always thought a cloth sling would be uncomfortable...I do yoga for my back but I am not that strong so I do get backache at times and worry about that happening when the baby is here! I was planning on using the carrier from newborn and probably will be using it a lot.

Can anyone help me out here?

I think that any carrier which takes bubs weight on the rump rather than the crotch is ok. With the mei tai, HAB etc. the weight is usually taken from knee-knee along the bottom of bubs thighs/bum and so are fine and don't risk spinal injury.

Also, the Mei Tai and HAB both pull baby in close to you so not all their weight is on their thighs and bottom, a lot of the weight is actually taken from their torso, IYKWIM.
I have a HAB and I just tie it really quite tightly. it is much more comfortable for me and it seems for her also.
