Hi
An open-tailed ring sling is a good option for newbies. Quick and relatively easy to use, somewhat versatile and comfy.
You want something that can be fully adjusted through the rings, not a pouch sling or a somewhat-adjustable pouch sling with rings.
There are quite a few brands you can try - I'm not very knowledgeable on ring slings, so will leave that to others. The Maya Wrap one is often recommended for those just starting out. you can pick them up second-hand at quite reasonable prices.
If you're more interested in a structured, 2-shoulder carrier, then you could look at a soft structured carrier like the manduca.
With regards to price - the carriers and slings with good reputations keep their value quite well. So although you may pay $150+ for things, you can get most of that back when you are finished with it (depending on its condition, obviously). The bjorns don't keep their value very well and like you most people find they're not terribly comfortable to use as baby gets a bit bigger.
