darrens done this in the past. and its been when his reflux has come up. but not out kwim? i hope Ava feels better soon!
Hi,
The last 2-3 days when my DD has been sleeping she will sometimes wake up all of a sudden and start screaming or crying without warning first!! She just starts up really quickly!! sometimes I need to go in and settle her or pick her up and calm her and other times she'll just stop by the time I've walked into her room to settle her and she'll have fallen back asleep.
The last 24hrs she hasn't really been herself as she's got a cold and is snuffly poor thing.... could this be upsetting her and making her do that? As if she's waking up all of a sudden and can't breathe properly perhaps? When she wakes I'm going to give her saline drops in her nose.
What is that all about? It's a bit upsetting![]()

Elise sometimes does that when she has wind. Wakes up screaming, in pain.
Sometimes she will fart it out while still half asleep, othertimes she will need help to get it out.
I was going to suggest that it may be a pain cry. She may have a sudden wind pain (or something else) that is waking her up?
The poor little thing.
Bella used to do this aswell.. only when she was quite young (as aposed to her being old now!!) but she stopped and has not done it now for ages.. and it was wind pain that made her do it.
Now she just farts in her sleep and talks, and blows rasberies! She sleeps well but I wake up at every noise!
Do you have one of the blue bulb things made by Fess?? Its for little noses.. you use the drops then the bulb to suck it out?? They are AWESOME! I use just the blue bulb with Bella now all the time when she is a bit stuffy..
Hope Ava gets better soon!!
Kate
Thanks girls, so it must just be wind or something hey?? I wonder if bub's that age can have nightmares??? They are learning so much each day their little minds are crammed with new info!
Kate - thanks! Yeah we've got one of those saline drops things for her nose but its' called "Flo" very similar to Fess. same stuff. it works a treat!!
ren they dont start dreaming til around 2, i hope miss ava stops waking herself soon!!
Ok, last night it happened again!! It was bad
DD woke up screaming in her sleep at least 6 times... I was up every hour with her.
When she would scream and with no warning, I would pick her up and hold her and comfort her and within a minute she'd be back asleep again..... she was fine as soon as i picked her up. This isn't like my DD??!
Is it because she's still getting over her cold/cough? She's got a pretty bad cough from the cold she had and maybe that's upsetting her? I can't work it out
But I am fast asleep and all of a sudden she's screaming and crying out!!!!
Even just before while sleeping in her cot in her room she started crying so i went in and she was sleeping still and hadnt woken up.... what the?? Could this be wind causing this???
Are you SURE babies don't get nightmares?? LOL
Hun have you checked her ears?? Maybe some lingering snot is infecting in her sinusses/ears that makes her scream out at night.
DD did this A LOT. Also ds does this if he has a wind, but he only does it once and then I burp him and it's over.
But yes, wind does make them wimper in their sleep. And sometimes you just can't get it outTry some colic/wind meds and see if that helps, if it does, you know it's wind, if it does not .... try eliminating more stuff ... cold, hot, wind, lights, dark, noises???? What did not bother them yesterday, might just bother them today *sigh*
You work by elimination, if it's not this, and not this and not this, it could be this or that or whatever, kwim??
Oh this is precious!! I was googling (I have time) about babies and dreaming and I found this
One of the comments was from a woman that said her husband has those dream till this dayBut what do babies dream about? Dr. Pollard does not even hazard to guess. Dr. Pollak says that asking him what babies dream about "is like asking whether your pet dog or cat is dreaming, because they can't communicate, and you can't ask. We presume that infants dream infantile things, but we don't really know what it is that they dream." My old dog used to bark while she dreamed and her feet would move like she was running. Clearly she was dreaming about what she spent 80 percent of her day thinking about (chasing squirrels). Luckily, there are no barriers like the scientific method or the Hippocratic Oath in blogging. I will state on the record that my baby dreams about nipples, gigantic pink nipples atop rapturous breasts, their sweet taste trapped like tea on her tongue.
I'm browsing more, so if I get something, I'll post it![]()
DD still does this. Why... i dont know. SHes not in pain.. or anything. Doesnt take that much to resettle her and its like shes 80% still asleep. I was told by my MCHN it could be a bad dream. No other explanation for it. Went till 3 months.. stopped for a month and came back. Who knows.
Ok, so there is a huge debate on "do babies dream/get nightmares"
I vote ... YES
What was really interesting is that nightmares are not really considerd bad. They are a learning process for your brain, so having nightmares is not nice for mommies, but it's part of growing up and your brain teaching you.
Ren, Bella does the same thing and has done since she was new and most of the time it's her needing to fart. She will just scream and scare the crap out of me and sometimes settles herself off to sleep again but sometimes she will need a cuddle but is still asleep.
I reckon that babies dream, cause Arabella chuckles herself silly in her sleep, real cute.
Ren, my DS did this too (sometimes still does but not so much anymore). I think it's pretty normal and like the other posts say could just be wind or she may have startled herself if she still has that startle reflex. If she hasn't been well with a cold lately, it could just be that causing her discomfort. Hang in there, give her lots of cuddles, you'll both get through it xox
She's wrapped each time she sleeps (in a miracle blanket) and can't get out so the startle reflex isn't bothering her while she sleeps so it's not that.
It must be a dream then... or wind.... I guess I'll never know!! But she stays asleep it's so bizarre!!! I just hope tonight isn't like it was last night!!! She did it heaps last night and it's scary when you're in a nice sleep and all of a sudden without warning your baby starts screaming and crying and not just a whimper either! Cos' suddenly you have to wake yourself up to attend to them and meanwhile I'm thinking "what what, whats happened!!!???" LOL
Good to know other babies do it too then!!![]()
Nadine - thanks for posting that article... interesting!!
Thanks girls.
