DD knows tummy, nose, mouth and eyes
Thats awesomeSo cute hehe
Brendan can point to his willy and bum![]()
The only one DS knows is 'mummy's head', as in we started a game called "put the block on mummy's head"....now everything has to go on mummy's head.....all the time.
Jessica, that's funny. Might be time for some new games though.
Re private parts, I'm not ready to teach DD what the name of her parts is. I don't know when I will be...probably when she's old enough to understand that some words should only be said at certain times. I was watching scrubs the other day and Turk said that he doesn't want his new baby daughter to know she has a vagina until she's 18...that sounds good to me LOL.
LOL. I had this discussion with a friend the other week. I have no problem calling a penis a penis - the girls know what a penis is as well and have no problems talking about it - but I just can't call their vagina a vagina. Partly I think because DW doesn't call it that, and I tend to follow her lead, but also because I know it's not really the vagina that they're talking about - it's the vulva, and I find that word even harder to say.
It's funny, I have no problem with it in a professional context, but I do at home with the girls.
Zander knows penis & vagina.
Juliette so far knows foot, nose, eyes & tongue.
ds knows:
doodle
boobies
bum
hand
foot or feet
fingers
toes
leg
arm
nose
eyes
ears
mouth
tongue
teeth
knee
hair
head
we haven't yet come up with anything for vagina simply because i am the only one in the house with one and ds rarely sees me completely naked.
you game me my giggle for the day....i know what you wrote, but i read it as "im the only one in the house'........all i can see is a great big vagina walking around the house
hahah everyone is looking at me, i am seriously laughing out loud!!!
MJ knows
head, hair, face, nose, ears, eyes, mouth, tounge, teeth, shoulders, arms hands, fingers, tummy, bottom, knees, legs, feet, toes.
We dont have a word for vulva/vagina (im with you Michael, its not a Vagina, but i cant call it a Vulva) or penis as the need has not yet arisen... DSS called it a pee pee and then a penis when he was older
When we are wiping we wipe MJ's "bottom" again technically not right but close enough.
When we were little it was a front bottom and a back bottom...
I remember reading on here somewhere that names for vulvas/vaginas and penis's should be discouraged because of sexual abuse and the diffiuclty to understand or know when it is going on - such and such was playing with my 'flowers' etc etc could me so many things.... A bit off topic, but its something i remembered and thought i should share
at 18months DD knows:
hair,
eyes, which she takes delight in poking mine 50times a day to let me know she knows
nose,
mouth,
teeth,
tongue, have to poke it out and wiggle it to demonstrate
chin,
cheek,
eyebrow,
shoulders,
boobies,
hands,
fingers,
tummy,
bottom,
feet,
toes.
No discussion yet on vulva/vagina although she did take an interest in mine in the shower, most unexpectedly - gave me a fright whilst bending over to wash my feet!!!!! LOL. Not sure what DH has called his bits when she discovered them in the bath (LOL!!). Will have to ask him.
She can only actually say, eyes, nose, mouth, hair.
I have to say it in the right order for him to point at
DS touches his ears and nose and then my nose and his mouth and my mouth.
He has just taken to patting my bb and saying 'nore, nore, nore' when he is thirsty and I will say they are my boobies do you want a drink and he just nods his head
He does know his penis and we call it both a penis and willy, mainly cause I want him to know it by it's real name and dp calls it a willy. I am glad he isn't a girl cause there is something about the word vagina that is so hard to say![]()
DD @ 2yr knows
Hair, head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, cheeks, shoulders, boobies, arms, hands, fingers, nails, belly, back, bottom, vagina, legs, feet, toes, penis...
I taught her to say Vagina and Penis because of the thread Sammiejane was referring too... It really made me think...
But in saying that i have had some embarrassing and funny moments out in public when she decides to tell people that she has a vagina, or point to dad and say Penis... But her favourite one is recognising boobies! As soon as she sees a bare chest (IRL or Photo or tv) she yells it out an points...
DS aged 20 months knows
hair,head,ears,eyes,mouth,nose,tongue,teeth,chin,c heeks,shoulders,neck,elbows,arms,
hands,fingers,tummy,bottom,legs,knees,feet,toes,he els,back,boobies.
DH tells DS he has a doodle but I tell him its a penis. He also knows where that is![]()
We have all the body parts down pat here, but penis is 'doo-doo' for doodle cause he can't say penis LOL. Mick, what about Yoni? I've started using that with the girls as it's not as confronting as saying vagina or vulva (especially in public! LOL)
DD1 is becoming quite the expert on body parts. We've progressed from eyes, nose, mouth, ears, head, hair, belly, bum, and boobies; to chin, cheeks, elbow, armpit, shoulder, neck, fingers/toes, hands/feet, wrist, heel, and bellybutton.
As for private parts - 'mutti' is what we have called girl's bits (I don't like the idea of the word 'vagina' coming out of a toddler's mouth, and it's not technically correct either - DD1 knows that 'mutti' only refers to her privates so I'm not worried about any confusion when it comes to potential molestation etc), and she can now tell me the difference between boys and girls - 'Boys. Doodles.' (She sees DH naked pretty frequently as he takes care of bathtime in the evenings and just chucks her in the shower with him.)
Lol, when I say where's the boo boo ( we were in the shower, thought I'd test him) he pointed & we 'aaah!!! Num!!'
I can no longer get dressed or shower around him with them uncovered...I get the aaah, num, then yelled at for putting them away!
ETA - from what I remember it wasn't so much the word the child uses & confusion...it was more that sexual predetors feel more confronted when a child uses the grown up words for their 'bits'. It is more likely to appeal to them if the child uses childish words IYKWIM.

i have a largely non-verbal 2.5yr child, but she understands (mimes, acts out instead of speaking)
eyes
ears
head
knees
elbows
feet
toes
bottom
elbow
shoulders
neck
most of it has happened organically, like i say "have you washed your knees?" and pretend to wash MY knees, so she copies. Considering she has a bath every night, didn't take long to teach her the body parts really. just repetition.
plus reading picture books, "look at teh funny eyes on that frog etc".
i'm unsure about the whole "vagina" issue too, i feel that this comes up in the context of going to the toilet (the need for the correct words) and urine doesn't come out of the vagina, doesn't it come out of the urethra? and that's a REALLY complicated word to be teaching a toddler!
so i keep thinking, if i had a little boy, yes, it would be stratightforward. Wee DOES come out of the penis, so i would feel fine about that.
but i don't know WHAT to tell DD, that her wee comes out her ???????
oh, and one of the few words she actually says, is BOOBIES! she loves her breastmilk.
re the child safety thing
i plan to buy the EVERYONE'S GOT A BOTTOM children's storybook, sold by Family Planning Queensland "a story about children keeping safe, crafted as a tool for parents and cares to gently start conversations about body ownership and self protection". The Playgroup Assocation in our state was advertising it in the magazine they put out, and it looks like a good book to help me explain things to DD.
if allowed i would put the URL to where you can get it from, just google it if interested. it's directed at under 8's.
Just back to the vagina thing again, sorry, I've been referring to it as a fanny.
Mainly because it seems an all purpose word instead of vagina/vulva and it's not quite so "in your face". Kinda like willy I guess, everyone knows what it means and it is a single meaning word here in oz.
Sorry to go off topic a little there!
BTW, good work little people, on your knowledge!!! They are incredible arent they?
