DD is 2 wks & 3 days old and since day 1 she's been suffering from wind/colic. On Monday I went and bought a colic mixture that I have heard many good things about it. We've been using it about 3 times a day and we are getting some good burps out of DD but she still seems to be really unsettled afterwards and I try burp her more, but cant get anything out of her. DD seems to burp the most half way through a feed, I dont get much out at the end of her feed.
So my question is, how do you burp your child? We've tried many many ways - sitting up on knew with hand under chin and rubbing back, slowly moving DD from side to side and back to front, over the shoulder, tummy down on lap and rubbing/patting back softly, cycling legs (bit difficult when they are so tense!). So are the any other ways you know how to burp a child that I havent already tried?!
Also, with a baby that has colic, how long would you 'work' on them?
DS didn't have colic, but was very windy and really hard to get to pass it from either end.
I used to hold him upright against my chest with my thumba nd forefinger across his shoulder blades, and my other hand rubbing/patting his back (rubbing worked better for us)
Also lying him flat and doing gentle cycling morions with his legs, or tummy massage, clockwise (important that its clockwise, something to do with digestion)
My mum showed me most of them, because I did have colic as a baby and she said it wouild go on for hours sometimes.
I have always burped Claire by putting her on my chest or over my shoulder and rubbing her back in circular motions, sort of between her shoulder blades. I find it works a bit better for her than patting. Also, if I just hold her upright (but not necessarily rubbing her back) for a while after her feed she'll let out a ripper of a burp after about 2 or 3 minutes.
yes. holding him firm against my chest in that postion sort of forces the legs down to a point, which is what helps with getting the wind up. He would always have them up a little but the longer I held him for the lower they would get.
Good luck, what a beautiful little baby and gorgeous name, born on my birthday. Obviously I have no ideas or suggesstions but I must have missed your birth announcement, I remember looking at you website ages ago so just wanted to say congrats, she is beautiful!
My sis had 2 colici babies, and found that a wheat pack heated in the microwave helped if they coudn't get any burps out and the bubs was in pain. just held on the tummy or back I think.
But we have had success with sitting bubs on knee and supporting head with one hand and using other hand to support back with gentle pressure to correct his posture to allow any wind to come out. But sometimes he just won't burp at all.
I have to admit I was told I didn't need to pat or rub, but I do, 'cause i know that if I was having wind related tummy pains I would like to be rubbed.
