    V Dry Skin on Newborn...

DS has had dry skin since birth - mainly on his feet and hands and then around his neck a little. A Dr and the maternal nurse have recommended sorbolene creme and/or aqueous cream. Today we used the aqueous and it seems to have gotten worse (lots of flaky skin on tummy). I dont know if it is a reaction to the aqueous or not (i tend to think it may be, i dont like these petroleum based products so i am thinking of not using the sorb or aqueous). I called the healthline here and he doesnt have any other symptoms that would lead them to think it is anything else.
Have any of you had this with your bubs? anything more natural or any products that helped? He is 8 days old.. any advice appreciated..

Olivia was born like an overcooked chook with a lot of peely flaky dry skin, and her skin continued to be dry for around 3 weeks post birth. Sorbolene did the trick. From memory it got worse before it got better!

Was your DS overdue? (Olivia was 10 days post 40 weeks, and I remember a midwife telling me it was common in overdue babies?)

I think you may just have to wait it out. Is he happy in himself? Do you think it is causing him any stress?

    Congratulations by the way!

no he was a week early (39 weeks) - i dont think it is distressing him - he doesnt scratch it or cry all day or anything like that so i guess i will wait it out and see what happens. hopefully this is the 'getting worse' part before it improves.

    Hi
My DD had dry skin when born for the first 10 weeks. I used sorbolene but it did nothing but I was given a Jurlique baby pack at my baby shower and found the Baby Soothing Cream to be fantastic!!. I still use it on her cheeks as that is the only spot that still gets very dry. She would be red under her chin as well, when little, and the Jurlique worked there too.

I got a 125ml tube and its still got heaps in it as you only need the smallest amount, you can also get bath and an oil in the same range. In the first two baths I noticed DD's tummy and legs felt smooth as a babys bum....haha and the people that would comment on her dry skin were surprised at how quickly it cleared up too.

Obviously I couldn't recommend it more, my Mum got it from the National Pharmacy Chemist.

Jesse had this too.. he was only 2 days over. But he just lost a layer of skin all over from head to toe. Didnt bother or effect him. We just put some sorbelene on it.. kinda made it come away a little easier. But yeh, if thats all it is, just let it go.. it will fix itelf up once its shed.

Olive oil is also a good treatment for dry skin. And you only need a small amount

My MCHN recommended putting a little olive oil in bub's bath water and not using any soaps, etc.

It seemed to do the trick.

As others have said olive oil is great, either in baths or massaged on skin.

I'd recommend olive oil or an organic product - most baby products including sorbolene is petrochemical. And sad to say, even the gorgeous Jurlique stuff has some in it too

Hi, dont use sorbolene or aqueous lotion they are both petro chemically based and are toxic especially on babies ultra fine skin. Just bathe them in a natural plant oil like jojoba, even olive oil and then rub the skin after the bath with nourishing avocado oil, you baby might be having a reaction to the synthetic creams you are using, go back to nature.

Just be careful with the olive oil if you put it on bubs before you go in the car. Have heard of a friend's bub who got 2nd degree burns from the sun through the back window.

That can happen with most oils

Maybe applying the oil with some cotton balls might be the way.

If you use oil (which I have used on both of my kids) don't use a nut oil incase they are allergic. I always used olive oil.

Kaetlyns Paediatrician said to use QV wash in her baths as it is soap free, and then use sorbalene creme afterwards. Also dont bath them to often.
He also said NO JOHNSON AND JOHNSON PRODUCTS but they smell so nice
