    Question Constapation / Farex

Hi, just wondering does anyone know about giving a 1 month old the syrup off prunes for constaption, or to keep bub regular if he hasn't been for a few days? Was given some info from MCHN and it stated that you could take 6 pitted prunes, cover in water and simmer until it became to a syrup, then store in fridge and use a teaspoon if required. I was thinking about diluting it again in water.

I'm a first time Mum, and new to Belly Belly, my son was born a month ago. He is formula feeding, and seems to be hungry alot! I was suggested by family to put some Farexs in his bottle?? Not exactly sure what it is and how this works, and is it okay for a 1 month old? Just changed formula recommened by MCHN to see if it would keep him fuller for longer. He was just under 6lb when born and now 8lb 3oz!!! Putting on lots of weight, MCHN says I'm feeding him too much!!! It's all new to me!

Hi Lizzy and welcome to BB. Being a new mum is pretty hard sometimes isn't it?

I'm not sure about adding anything to your babies bottles as he is still so tiny. His digestive system isn't geared for anything other than milk just yet. I wold ask a second opinion before giving my 1 month old farex and then prune syrup....Farex is infused with iron, which causes constipation in many people, so i am not surprised he is constipated. My daughter got constipated when i gave it to her too.

What makes you think he is hungry? Is he very unsettled? Sometimes we can mistake other things for hunger. Like, tiredness for example. hen my babies are tired they want to suck, they are not necessarily after food but like the comfort of it.

You're ding a great job and have come to a good place to ask lots of questions.

Did you change formula because of the constipation, or is your bub constipated since changing formula?
DS1 got constipated on one type of formula but was fine on HA 1 formulas.
I would be hesitant to put farex (rice cereal) in the bottle, formula should be OK nutrition wise
Ask you mchn for clarification or talk to your GP about it

Thanks Falguni, rayray and mum1984. I haven't given him Farex yet, just asked the question as I was unsure about it. Hes not constipated but just wanted to have something on hand in case this new formula did make him, I didn't want hiim to get to the point where he was in pain if it happened.

I changed formula recommened by MHCN, as the formula he was on Bellamy's Organic was not keeping him full. He was drinking so much, and he does push it away when he is not hungry. MHCN suggested S26 or Karicare and he should only be having 600mls a day. He is drinking about 700mls. She said he had put on double the weight he is susposed too. I'm confused! I try to space him out and give water, 700mls is the best I can do.

    Hey Lizy,

I wouldn't recommend putting farex in the bottle - it could be a choking hazard, he is definately to little to be having that yet.

Its very confusing being a new Mum isn't it? I second Rayray, we use a HA1 formula too and no constipation issues here either
