    crying normal!?!

My daughter is five months old, was born six weeks early. She cries alot. I think its wind/colic/gas. She was tested for reflux, luckily it came back negitave. But could changing her formula help? She's on S26 Gold now and are putting on weight. She has one diper a day, although I might add is a bit on the watery side. Also she is now 4.5 kg and drink only 150ml a feed. Is this maybe not enough? If I give her more, she seems to spit it up when I burp her. And an other thing - I make formula in batches, iow I put 500ml water in a jug and add 20 scoops of formula, mix and then put 150ml in the bottle. [ Yes I am an new mom and feel stupid like hell!! ]

    Please help

    Ps. Great web-site

    Hi Nadine,

    Don't feel stupid - you're not!

All bubs will feed differently but when DD was about that weight, she was drinking about the same. It has only been in the last week that she has started having 200ml. Prior to that she was only taking 100ml at a time! And she is over 7Kg... it just depends on what bubs needs. If she is happy with 150ml then that is ok. So long as she gets the recommended amount over a 24hr period which is about 600ml at that age (but check with your MCHN).
In regards to her crying all the time. When does she cry? Is there a pattern to it? How long does she cry for? What kind of a cry is it? Can you see a particular trigger? What happens to make her stop crying? A baby who cries a lot is very draining, isn't it? DD went through a stage where she would cry (which turned into a scream) for 7 hours straight at night! My GOODNESS I was a wreck! With the help of the MCHN I was able to establish is was related to being over tired and a little bit of wind. Unfortunately, some babies just cry a lot for no reason too. Hang in there.

    Mother Goose,
I can't realy figure out a pattern for her crying. Last night she was screaming for one hour straight and I gave her 50ml formula out of total desperation. That helped for maybe 15 minutes and then she started again. I rubed her tummy with some baby oil. That helped, because she loves being naked. I even got some giggels. But on went her pants and she started up again. She finaly passed out on my chest after I danced around the table for 10 minute. I looked inside the pants, but there was nothing that could have scratched her and the pants are WAY to big to be pinching her. Also the dipers are big and I can't see that there are a rash or something that could be bothering her. I would love to leave her naked, but it almost freezing here and laying about naked is not an option, even with the heater on.

MCHN is Maternal Child Health Nurse - it may called something different in your state.

If you think she has colic or wind there are a couple of things you can try. You can try massaging her belly in a circular clockwise direction (direction food travells), you can slowly but gently and firmly pump her legs as though she is riding a bike, slowly bring both knees up to her chest at the same time and hold it there for a few sec (maybe 30). This should all help with getting her to pass wind. You can also try getting in a shower with her and letting the water massage her back and tummy (this helped my DD alot). If you're not confident standing you can take a plastic chair or similar in to sit on.

Does your DD like a bath? Maybe try giving her a bath when she is getting upset - it might help to relax her.

You could also try something called Infacol which is suppose to help with colic and wind issues. As is Infants Friend. Infacol worked for us and Infant's Friend makes DD's bottom sound like she should be in a band! One of the girls on here (Caro) swears by something she gets from a pharmacy in WA but I'm not sure what it is called... I'll see if I can find the link... https://www.bellybelly.com.au/forums...ad.php?t=38401

Does she settle if you go for a drive or walk?

How long was the episode last night (including the 15 minute breather when her nappy was off)? What time did it happen?

Have you spoken to your doc or early childhood nurse about these crying issues? They might be able to help. Have you got someone you can "tag team" with so your not the only person caring for her during one of these sessions? I know that after 30 minutes I needed DH to take over for a little bit.

    HTH and hang in there.

Last night was much better. (previous night was about two hours after 19:30) She was in a great mood, giggels and smiles alround. We drove out to my husband's brother on the farm after the bath and she nodded of as soon as we hit the tarmac. I think I might be just overreacting or am just overtired.

We did take her to the dr (about two months back) and he told me that he can see/feel some gas in the tummy area, and gave me something called Donnetal that I mix with gripewater and give just before bathtime at night. That helped, so its not as bad as it was, but I thought it would stop the crying al together. It did howevers stoped her from arching her back and crying her breaht out. He also told me that maybe she is just a difficult baby and I must hang on , this to shall pass. Easy for them to say stuff like that.

I will try the shower thing - sounds like heaps of fun!!!!

I read the forum on the mirical colic remedy, but I'm from South Africa - that would be quite a long drive!!?!?!

    Thanks
    Nadine

Jack was only up till 2 weeks ok taking 120ml bottle so dont fret about the amount but can I ask is that the right amount of scoops for 500ml it seems a huge amount, I could be wrong but I know my s26 admittedly is normal not gold its only 1 scoop per 60ml so aorun 8 1/2 scoops for 500ml

ok I checked the wyeth S26 site and yeah 1 scoop per 60ml if you are adding 20scoops for 500ml this could be the reason she is crying :hugs: sorry

OMG AM I POISINING MY BABY!?!?!?!?

I checked my tin S26 gold and it says 6 scoops for 150ml for five feeds a day - that sounds to much now that I read it. Please post the S26 website address so I can check myself (please excuse I'm a capricorn - control freak!)

    Hi Nadine,

Ok, first - take a deep breath.

I just did some (really) quick calculations in my head and the amount of scoops you're using for the volume seems correct from Rach's post. 6 scoops per 150ml = 12 for 300, 18 for 450 (3 x 150). It works out to 1 scoop per 25ml. There are 20 lots of 25 in 500 so 20 scoops would be correct.

I'm glad last night was a little better. Perhaps the motion of the car helped? Maybe if she gets really upset again, you can pop her in the car and take a short drive, or pop her in the pram and go for a walk?

For the product in WA, I think Caro mentioned they ship it out. I will see if I can get her to pop in here...

When we're tired, things always seem much worse. And that is ok - because it means that at that particular point in time, things are bad. Trust your instincts.

What a rotten thing for that doctor say to you! Maybe see if you can get a second opinion from another doctor. In my experience, "difficult baby" is a label that they give when they have hit a wall. Try and get another opinion.

Good luck and keep us up to date!

I took a good look at the tin (ok I read the label seven times) and its clearly says 6 scoops for 150ml. Maybe is made different here.

That was the second opinion. The first guy just told me he is sorry to hear and that was it!! He did not even prescribe something - just stuff that you can buy off the shelf, but that was not working. So I thought that as long as she is gaining weight, eating and does not have a fever, I am going to suck it up and be a mom. Just some days I don't feel like I can trust myself to know best for baby.

I just want to say that writing this forum is helping me cope SO MUCH (Ok, it's doing nothing for my workload) but I don't feel so alone anymore. I am in some other threads to and it means the world to me that there are others that also worry like I do. I don't have any friends that has had babies that I can relate to. I am first in my circle of friends to have a baby.
    Thanks a million

Nadine - stop stressing about the formula - you are mixing it correctly.

I'm glad BB is helping. It is a great place
