    eczema and steroid cream?>

i have been told that DD's got eczema on her face. (i had been told it was baby acne but it just kept getting worse and worse, flaky and red) anyway.. she gave me some steroid cream to use, but i am just wondering what is so bad about steroid creams? i vaugely remember something about them not being very good, but cant remember. but if it gets rid of the eczema that is a good thing isnt it?

I think prolonged use of steroid creams can thin the skin. If it's only used every now and hten it should be fine.

try qv repair cream, it is fine for babies and works great on excema, you can just get it from the chemist. prolonged use of steroids thins the skin and is not great, and i find that the qv cream offers more comfort. you can also get goats-milk soap from the chemist which is nice and soothing in the bath, alternatively, add a stocking-foot (tied and closed) full of rolled oats into the bath. to get the flaky skin off, get a cotton wool ball and some oil (almond is really good) and wipe over the area, you don't need to wash it off, then put some qv cream on, this will give alot of relief and is better than steroids. the thing with steriods is that they work very quickly, but they are not good for the skin, a cream like qv will take a little bit longer to clear it, but will give longer, better results.

Hollo, i have heard that steroid creams where not good for young babies, but in saying that i had to use steriod cream on my DD2 since she was 3 months old. I only used all up probably one tube of it over a period of time but she also had really bad exzema (sp?) and it cleared it up nearly instantly but i kept using it when she had flare ups. I also bathed her in Alpha Kerri oil and then after she was dry i moisterised her in the Alpha Kerri cream which has helped a great deal. I am still using the oil and cream to this day and my DD2 is nearly 9 months old, i am too scared to try normal soap as i have the exzema under control

    oh wow she's only little
I would not be using the cream personally. It can thin the skin causing more problems then it fixes. Jaidan has eczema from a young age and we used it and I have noticed now he scratches and it cuts his skin more.
I would try preventing it as much as possible as oposed to just treating it.

Washing powder and soaps were the main thing here. The things that have helped are using tri nature washing powder. I get it from wild child nappies. It seems exxy but it works out cheaper, the pack (2kg) lasts at least 2 months here. Also Avado or Gaia baby wash, shampoo and moisturiser which you can buy at coles. And moisturise as much as possible. We used to do it up to 4 times a day which really helped

well dd1 had a bit of eczema too, not like this though, so we only use qv wash, and a sensitive skin laundry detergent already. i just started another thread about moogoo, so if anyone knows anything about that product let me know.
