    Growing pains in a toddler?

DD has been having some atrocious nights lately, waking up screaming and throwing tantrums often through the night. Initially, I thought it was a teeth/new skills type thing.

Now I'm wondering if maybe she is having growing pains. A few people have pointed out that they notice she has 'really grown' or 'legs seem longer and thinner', etc. And during the night, she has occasionally scratched at her shins and said 'sore' (which I assumed she was mixing up with 'itchy' because she was scratching)

I am curious whether anyone else thinks their under-3yo has had pains from growth spurts?

    Hi there
My DS is almost 17 months and I too think that he's had some growing pains
A few weeks ago DS was screaming and I knew it wasn't his teeth as he grabs at his mouth when he's teething, he wasn't sick so I put it down to growing pains as he was fine the next morning.
I hope your DD is ok now.

aww sweety this just so tears at my heart in an unimaginable way... please don't let my pain scare you. I was 2 when drs said i had growing pains the pains were unbearable and i get terribly upset regarding it now and i am 28 almost 29 years of age. When i was 16 i still suffered with these pains and they still brought tears to my eyes. I went back again and again specialist after specialist test after test to scan after scan to be told your still suffering from growing pains.

When i was around 22 i found an article in the newspaper and it said growing pains are what drs say when they simply don't know, its one of these things that drs cant explain, that a few children experience. Please PLEASE PLEASE don't let them tell you that. Please don't let them say she will grow out of it. IT HURTS if that is what it is and it normally happens at end of day and worse if your have been walking lots or active or standing lots. Please don't except it PLEASE.

I still suffer with this and still investigating. i have found that my knee cap tissue is not fully formed around my knee cap and that causes pain. Also my knees sit further back than the average. But the pains are still on my shins all up my shins deep in the bone like feeling. But these pains even after child birth and 3 c sections are still unbearable to me. deep heat is my only relief and heat packs and warm baths. please, not to say you havn't, but dont ever underestimate the pain your child "COULD" be in it is different with each child. Please see a dr intill you get to the bottom of it. PLEASE message me if u want i dont mind i am happy to talk about this. I fear for my kids that they might go through such a thing..

BIG WHOPPING MASSIVE for your child

I was wondering about this just recently myself as Oskar sometimes grabs his lower arm and squeezes it like it hurts. It's hard when they can't explain to you what's going on or what's hurting or how it's hurting to you both.

I'm 24 and still get 'growing pains' in both my legs, mainly when I'm tired. My dad is 57 and he still gets them, so they are definetly real!! A heat bag works great.

Squidipa - I'm sorry to hear you have so much trouble with pain. It certainly would be terrible to think DD was suffering like that. Do you ever get relief from paracetamol or ibuprofen? I have dosed her up tonight to see if it makes any difference. If it continues to go on. I will definitely have her checked out, but what kind of tests do you ask for?
As Ozzie said, it's hard when they don't yet have the language to explain. And I can already hear the doctors fobbing me off (kindly and sympathetically of course, as you do to neurotic parents)

Ozzie and GG, thanks for your replies, at least I know I'm not the only one wondering...

Hippie - I did read that heat helps if that's the problem. I imagine it won't be easy to try on a toddler who's half asleep and upset, but I will give it a go. Fingers crossed I won't have to and we'll all have a great night tonight for a change.

I appreciate your replies everyone - thanks.
