    Exclamation Help! Lactose Intolerance

I have tried, Yoghurt the other day. A full fat plain Yoghurt (couldn't find one without live cultures in it) and she ate a teaspoon and half and came out in blotches all over here face and upper body. It faded pretty quickly eg less than 30-40 mins.
Then I tried her on pumpkin and sweet potato just yesterday (she is 7 months old and 1 day and has been eating food since 4 months) and decided to add a bit of grated cheese (about 5 to six pieces of grated bits) and she came out splotchey with swollen eyelids and slightly grey/pink under her eyes. I know I am a twit for giving it her the cheese, but I thought it was once off. :
Her Poos haven't really changed either since I tried introducing Yoghurt and Cheese!
However I gave her baby custard and she gobbled that up with no problems
I am very lactose intolerant completely since 25 years old, my husband isn't.
    I am still b/fing!
Help, what do I do? How do I get dairy into diet?

Breast milk has high levels of lactose in it so I would highly doubt that it is LI. I have a severly lactose intolerant bub, and the LI is generally symptomatic of bloating, diahorreah which really stinks (trust me!!!) and occasionally vomitting. She could not tolerate breast milk. I recommend taking her to the dr and seeing if they can order skin pri ck testing to test for cows milk protein allergy.

Try a soy yoghurt if she is reacting to cows milk bases. And keep BFing as long as possible, she is getting adequate calcium from you, plus all the other added benefits of breast milk.

I agree with Ali, lactose intolerance is actually extremely rare. Cows milk protein allergy or intolerance is actually more likely. I would just avoid using yogurt for a while and get an appointment with someone.

Not entirely true Ali - it is very rare for babies to be allergic to the lactose in human breast milk but more common for them to react to cows or goats milk. The lactose in BM is more compatible to the human gut than other milks (wonderful BM!!) so even LI bubs tend not to have a prob with it.

Christy is right on the protein part though - I think many people who are LI are actually allergic to the protein. My boys, for example, cannot handle cows or goats milk, even lactose-free cows milk.

Keep up the BF - it is the best your bub can get at this stage

    Wink Hi

    Hi,

    My name is Alice,

I have 2 girls and 1 boy born 25th Jan 2009 and 2 of my children have lactose intolerance. I found that they would have severe wind pains and 1 of the primary things I noticed was that they both had bubbles in their bowel movements. My formula experience with my daughter showed me that she have both dairy and dairy intolerance since she would also react to the formula with any whey, milk protiens ect with extremely acidic bowel movements to the point where 2 poo's and her bum would be bleeding. My son only seems to have the lactose intolerance which seems better but he can't handle the wind at all to the point where he wouldn't even suck from my boob.
If your baby has these symptoms it is likely that they are lastose intolerant.
I am also of Native American decent which if researched shows that 80 to 100% of Native Americans have lactose intolerance.
They also say that Asian, African American and other decents have a high percentage of lactose intolerance.
My older daughter has thrived even though she had to be put on soy formula so I have done the same with my son. Having the assurance that she did absolutely fine and has progressed above average with everything!!
I am confident that it was the best choice and that if it happens that anyone elses baby has lactose intolerance, not being able to breastfeed although sad and disappointing we always need to remember and find reassurance in the fact that a healthy, happy and growing baby is always best.

    Regards,

    Alice

If it is LI, there is a yoghurt made by Volia that is lactose free.
