Feeling like an obsessive mum here but dd seems to be very lethargic this afternoon. She was due for a feed around 11, but had been awake and "playing" for a couple of hours, was getting tired so 10.30 I rocked her to sleep, then she slept to 12.30, tried to feed her but she fell asleep again after 5 min.
I changed her nappy, stripped her down but she wasn't coming out of her sleep much. Finally got her to take some more, maybe another 5 min and she's gone back to sleep again.
Her poos are a dark yellow/orange colour.
She is never this sleepy, always really alert and active for her feeds. And normally feeds every 3 hours like clockwork.
Could it be after a growth spurt or could her blood sugar be low?
Sigh! She is just so little and I wish I knew more!
With little ones I dont think you can be too careful. It may be absolutely nothing (and probably is) but would you forgive yourself if it was 'something' and you didnt get it checked out?
Playing for a couple of hours is a long time for a Bub that age. At 10.30 I would have fed her instead of rocking her back to sleep. She was probably just exhausted and hence falls asleep after eating. My babies only ever feed for 5-10mins anyway. But having said that I can't physically see her to access her and given its unusual maybe get her checked out even if it is just to reassure yourself.
I agree with N2L that you should call a 24 hour health line - there are a few and your health fund may have one if you have PHI. Always better to be safe than sorry, and you'll only worry yourself silly until she wakes up and is her "normal" self.
Otherwise, I'm sure its absolutely nothing and just another one of those things that drives mums with new bubs up the wall with worry and second guessing. I'm pretty much put the house on her just having a big sleepy afternoon and unfortunately you're probably going to pay for it when she does wake up with LOTS of feeding to catch up on what she's missed during her sleepy period. FWIW, A has been screaming all morning (from 10am until 1.30 pm). She is now asleep and I don't expect (read hope!) to hear from her for at least another couple of hours. I also had to wake her yesterday morning to feed her because we had to go out - she had been sleep for 5 hours and it was an extremely half hearted 3 minute feed.
Try not to stress, give the nurse a call, and when you're reassured its all good take the opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy being hands free for a while. Hang in there. I promise all the second guessing does ease.
She has just woken up by herself and is feeding with a vengeance! Hopefully she's back to normal. If not I will give the nurse a call!
Thanks for the advice! So good to have experienced mums!
If it's just sleepiness for one afternoon I wouldn't stress, unless she was showing signs of some other kind of illness (like a temp or a snotty nose or something).
I am glad she had a good feed this afternoon! Possibly she was having her longer sleep cycle in the afternoon and you may find she wants an extra feed (or two!) during the night to make up for it.
You are doing a great job
It does sound like she was just overtired. It's great to hear that she made up for the missed feed. You really are doing a great job hun and things sound like they are going very well. It is so normal to be worried about everything at this stage. Soon you will feel more relaxed and realise what we can all see already - you are doing a fantastic job and are an awesome mum
