Question How to manage sleeping/floor time with rolling baby - at wits end

    Hello,
DS has just started to roll from his back to his front - wonderful BUT, it means that during the daytime, he will not have a nap as he as soon as he is put in his cot, he rolls onto his tummy and then cracks it and starts screaming until I come and get him and roll him back...then we start again. The only time he does not do this is when I put him down in the evening and he is soooo tired that he falls asleep on his back.

He is also like this when I put him on the floor - goes from back to front and then screams. I can no longer get anything done during the day and he wont have a sleep nor can I leave him to play on the floor for even 5 mins.

I am at my wits end as DH has been away for the past days/nights the house is a mess, the washing is not getting out and I'm exhausted from his screams. In desperation I just tried to get him to lie down with me in our bed to see if he / we could nap, but it did not work

Any ideas or suggestions, or how long did this phase go on for you???

Oh hun, DD did exactly the same thing and I was ready to sscccrreeeeeaaaammmm! But she couldn't help it. Their little bodies seem to just go 'ok, you have a new skill... now PRACTICE!!!. It was impossible to change nappies, dress her etc...

Thing is, I had totally forgotten about this until I read your post and it was only a few months ago! So it DOES pass and from memory it was only a couple of weeks max that she did it so compulsively.

Of course, now she stands up in her cot as soon as she wakes up (and often before she is even fully awake) and then stands there and looks stunned and cries like 'why am I up here and how to I get down??!!' so there's more 'versions' of this to come I'm afraid!

Good luck. I guess you have no choice, but until this passes I'd suggest that you just give up on the housework, you've got enough on your plate.

With the floor time, although it might be annoying for you, it's great for him as it is developing his head/neck muscles. There will be a time he enjoys (or at least tolerates) being on his tummy for longer periods..DD is at this stage now.

With sleeping, until he figures out how to roll the other way, or again tolerate being on his tummy (DD half the time goes to sleep on her tummy now), can you get one of those safe sleeper things? If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's a bit of material with two rolls at either end which you place bub in between so they can't roll over. He may just figure out he can squiggle down/up past it and roll over anyway..lol.

It will pass soon though, so I'd forget about the housework for now

Yeah, I was thinking something to stop him rolling at nap time.

He'll get past this, and it won't be too long, probably. They do get so frustrated, I know. I'm not a crying-out type or anything, so don't take this the wrong way, but could you try letting him go a little longer before righting him when he's screaming on his tummy? It might give him a little more motivation to learn to flip back is all.

Hope he gets over his frustration soon.

I was going to do this post myself!! We are going through the exact same thing and it is doing.my.head.in!!!

My fantastic little sleeper is gone...Temporarily I hope!

Thankfully he is only doing this usually 1 or 2 out of his 3 day naps so is still getting enough sleep but it's just sooooo frustraing. He is also doing it at night which is causing multiple wake ups.

I'm going to borrow an anti roll/sleep positioner thing off a friend tomorrow and hope that helps. I am also making sure that ALL of his awake time is on the floor but he is still not getting the knack of rolling back over. He spends the whole time on his tummy usually and is happy to do this while awake, it's just the naps that are so frustrating. I know my other two did this but the difference is they were happy to fall asleep on their tummy and he's not. He also seems to be much more obsessive about rolling over in his cot. I can roll him back and before I get to the door he's on his tummy again! He is also my slowest to roll/crawl.

I hope for both our sakes they get the hang of it soon.
