I just read the wikipedia article on eye colour. Illuminating.

Turns out eye colour is not the result of a single gene, and the colour is actually determined by the amount of melanin present in different layers of the eye and the refraction of light through those layers. There is no actual pigmentation other than brown.

It would appear the genetics of eye colour is very complicated and differences in eye colour in families may not be immediate cause for alarm.

I also discovered my sister's yellow eyes are called amber.
