Losec for reflux, I have a few questions.

    Hi ladies,
As you know we've had a rough time with our little girl lately, 7-8hrs of a night of constant screaming & feeding. We went to the hospy tonight as it started again and I didn't want another 7-8hrs of her screaming.
She was prescribed losec for silent reflux but they didn't tell me how many times a day she has it.
The pharmacist said to dissolve half a tab, 5mg in water and give it to her. I used EBM, as she is BF but when I looked on the packet it doesn't say if it's once a day or every few hrs etc, does anyone know? It's a 10mg tab, halved. 5mg dissolved.
Also what are your experiences with losec? How long does it take to work?

NO experience with that med, but i'd give the pharmacist a call. THey should have the details from the prescribing doctor.

Bella used to have 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night.. So used to full 5ml tab a day. But I would call the hossy back and ask just to be sure.

Hey babe, we used to give half a tab in the morning and half in the evening. I used to dissolve it in a tiny bit of water on a spoon then give it to her that way. You won't see a difference right away, it took around 10 days for us to have our smiley happy baby back xxxx

Morning and night, 12 hour appart, before a feed

If it doesn't work in a few days go back, as it wasn't a high enough dosge for DD2, she is on double that dosage and it is just keeping it at bay.

    Good luck xxoo

Dissolve 1/2 a tab in some cooled boiled water and give 2 times a day 12 hrs apart before a feed.

DS1 was on from 5 weeks till nearly 8 months. I got jack of trying to properly dissolve the tablets so went to a compounding pharmacy and got a liquid made up, is $ but much easier (well apart from trying to get a baby to take bitter medicine) they did try and flavour it for me but due to the ph of the medicine they did not hava many choices so was a slight improvement (think pina colada flavour LOL).

Good luck I hope it helps you wont see an immediate huge improvement but we saw suble with in 2 days and improvement took about 5 - 10 days for us.

We were only prescribed 5mg daily to start with, and never needed to go up from there. I would call them and ask to make sure. Also, when you dissolve it it breaks down into small little ball thingo's, the best dosing device we found was the big syringe that came with the nurofen 3+ months bottle, everything else left half of them still inside. We also had to use apple juice as DS would gag on it when we made it with water and it all just came back out again. Since you are giving EBM anyway, i would mix it with that to make sure she gets it all down

    Good luck!

I don't have any experience with Losec to offer. I just wanted to say that I'm glad you've got something to help and I hope it works so you and your baby girl can enjoy each other again.

Just wanted to add, do NOT crush the tablets - as appletree mentioned, when they dissolve they break up into little balls - the balls are the things that neutralise the stomach acid

I'm just dissolving them in breastmilk is that right? Also I cut them into quarters because they're 10mg tabs, so 2.5mg morn & 2.5mg night.

My gp told me not to cut them to dissolve the whole tab in some boiled cooled water and then syringe the required amount into mouth. It will only work if the lilting balls are all intact.

You CAN cut them in half, the balls will stay in tact when cut, just not when crushed.

Dissolving in breast milk is fine babyluv! Are you able to confirm with your GP the dosage? 2.5mg is low, but a good place to start.

Hope it goes ok for you xxxx

oh hun i feel for u my dd has severe reflux and screamed and cried for hours our record was from 5pm-10am straight of screaming and no sleep so i know how it feels to feel helpless the recommended dosage is approx 1mg per kilo of weight so if she weighs 5kgs then 5mgs a day would be the dose however they do sometimes prescribe over this my dd is 15 montgs and still on it and is not yet 10kgs but has been on 10mgs for awhile now. it took a few weeks to kick in but this is because my dd had a burnt out throat so that had to heal first as she was on zantac which did nothing for the reflux . i hope she gets some relief soon and u get some sleep xox

Jakabella: I have to cut them as they are a 10mg tab & she has 5mg a day and when dissolved they don't mix evenly with the BM or water.

I'm having trouble with the little balls, I gave it to her with a little syringe today and then noticed a while later little dried brown balls in the bottom of the container, not sure how to get them all up.

Thanks EryBery, we have a pead app tomorrow I really hope we can get this sorted, it's breaking my heart!
