ok so DS was always a great milk drinker. then about 4 months ago he went off normal full cream milk. would drink flavoured but i usually gave that to him as a treat and tried to encourage plain milk. didnt last for long and then he decided not to drink it at all so we started subsituting with extra cheese and youghurt.
anyway i normally drink UHT skim milk and much prefer it in my hot drinks. DS has decided in the last month that he loves milk again but will only drink the UHT skim milk in the fride. needless to say we are going thru almost a litre of milk a day now!
i was just wondering if skim milk is ok for him? or should i try and encourage full cream again?
I'm no expert, but I would imagine skim milk is better than no milk at all. From what I understand, full cream is recomended, but if he will only drink skim then I guess there's nothing you can do.
The thing is that babies and toddlers really need the fat, so low fat and skim milk fill them up without the fat. That's ok sometimes but not really ideal as a daily thing. Milk is not necessary in their diet though. Calcium is, but it doesn't have to come from milk. Full fat cheese and yoghurt are good dairy sources of calcium, and there are tonnes of non-dairy sources like almonds, sesame seeds and tofu. There is a great list here: http://www.vegetarianvictoria.org.au...t-summary.html
