ok - is this normal? a sleep and pee question

I am certainly not complaining about this but I was out at a BBQ last night DD seemed unsettled as we got close to her normal bed time so I gave her a feed and said my good byes and came home.

Its not very far from where I live so she screamed the whole way home. I was home by 9.30 so I changed her and put her in some fresh clothes and decided to let her suck to sleep. By 10.30 I moved from the lounge into her bedroom and I sat and rocked to to sleep (the swaddling woke her a bit) popped her into bed and went to bed myself - around 11ish maybe just after by this stage.

Well little miss slept until 6.45am this morning I also leaked all over my doona but she would have slept longer but I couldn't hear or feel her breathing and her face was cool so of course I panicked and shoved my icey cold fingers down her pjs to check the rest of her temp and to feel her HB so it was a good 7 almost 8 hours solid (for her I woke a few times wondering when she would wake up) how common is that for a 7 week old? She could have just been exhausted from the day yesterday following a hot day the day before

    ALSO

I had her on a play mat the other day and she got super grizzly after a little bit when I picked her up I noticed she was wet so I smelt the wet patch and I swear it smelt like cat pee so of course poor moggy got into trouble ..... fast forward to this morning .... DD peed when I changed her nappy and I noticed for the first time that her wee was yellowish and smelt like cats pee ....I have only just recently started drinking coffee again but no more than 2 caffeinated drinks in a day. Is she dehydrated making her pee smell like that and be all yellow? Is it the coffee? something else like my vitamins which I keep forgetting to take then remember so not a consistent iykwim?

I do not really go around sniffing wee but I was curious

I know I am probably worrying over nothing, please don't ask how many times a day I feed coz I really couldn't tell you. I use to pay a lot more attention to it but that seems to have stopped I know we have up to 4 feeds in the morning and she cluster feeds late arvo and evening as to the number of times though

    how normal are these things??

    Thanks Nae x x x

Can't help much but wanted to reply. My lad hasn't gone more than 5 hrs asleep yet, but I'm sure the sleep is normal, you're probably right she was exhausted. See what happens over the next few nights.

Can't help much on the pee either - I drink 2 coffees some days & haven't noticed a stong smell, but if I did I would have blamed the cat too!

    Hiya,
My DD sometimes has a long sleep after a busy day like that - epsecially when we've done lots of socialising - then goes back to 'normal' (ie waking for feeds 2-3 times overnight). A few mums in my Mother's Group have babies who started 'sleeping through' at about 7 weeks so you may be one of the lucky ones!
As for the wee I'd say it does sound like she could've been a bit dehydrated -my DD's wee is definately 'smellier' on hot days. I guess just try and offer her the boob more often to keep her fluids up. Some people recommend offering sips of water too but not sure if that's suitable for a very young baby....anyone know?

    Hi NaeNae
Sleeping for 7-8 hours does happen and is nothing to be concerned about.
Smelly yellow urine can be a sign of infection, dehydration or caused by some medications including vitamins. In your case, because the yellow smelly urine only happens occasionally I would suggest that it is related to either your vitamins or perhaps mild dehydration. What I suggest that you do is try to remember when you last had your vitamins. Did you take them within 48 hours of the yellow urine? You could also take note of how many wet nappies you get. I would expect at least 6 in 24 hours. In this case it is very unlikely that your baby is dehydrated. One last possible cause that I can think of is not passing urine foe a number of hours (sleeping for 8 hours). The small could be caused by the urine sitting in the bladder for so long and the yellow would be caused by no fluid intake for 8 hours causing the urine to become a little concentrated.

    Hi Nae

DS was about 6 or 7 weeks old when he first slept for a long stretch and it was about 7 hours too. We'd been out late and I'd come home, fed him and had him in bed about 11pm. Expected to be woken at about 1am or 2am like normal, but instead I woke at 6:30am to find he was just stirring in his cradle in our room. I remember waking DP up and going....OMG he didn't wake up. Then asking if DP had got up to him in the night (we were finger feeding EBM at that stage). Nope, he just slept through. He did that for about 5 nights in a row, then went back to more frequent waking. Eventually he started stretching his night sleeps out really well and has stuck to that so we're fortunate.

In relation to the smelly pee thing....how long had she been in the nappy? Sometimes DS has smelly yellow nappies if he's been in them a long time. His morning nappy after sleeping through always stinks. Is Shae in cloth? I know our wee smells a lot more ammonia-like in MCNs some days.

NaeNae the sleeping thing DD does here too. She has always since birth (all but 3 or 4 nights) slept at least 8 hours a night. One night after a busy day she went 11 hours! I panicked too, I had been checking her since 5am! Thought my boobies were gonna explode at that point! . I was told to always wake her after 3 hours by the hospital but gave up as I was spending 2 hours unwrapping, changing, cool washer etc and she was not even mustering a groan!

Not sure about the wee thing but I think others may have helped with that.

Hi Nae, a midwife advised me to offer 10 mls of cooled boiled water to Poppy on very hot days if she seems dehydrated. I've only done it once because she doesn't seem bothered by the heat and mum's house is pretty cool anyway.

    Thanks everyone,
well so much for our long sleeps missy was up until midnight last night and would only settle down laying in bed next to me sucking on boo boo As for her wees, ALan I think you were spot on with the vitamins and her holding on for a while - it was a super big wet one and it was only that I had no nappy under her that I noticed it anyway, she wee'd all over her change mat during another change yesterday and it was not as potent.

I swear I feel like a fool sometimes worrying about whats normal and whats not
