Poo ... very white in colour

    Hi All,

Just wondering. My DD's poo been very runny and mustard colour these last few days. Today it has been off white.

Usually her poo is either green or dark yellow but not this white.

Is there something wrong or is she not getting enough iron?

DD is 14mths. Her diet today was:

    A2 Milk
    blueberry/advocado shake
    Lamb and spinach cassorole
Step 3 S-26Gold with mega oil (omega 3 and 6)
    Yogurt
    A2 Milk

She will be having dinner soon

    Thanks in advance.

    hi there!
i am not sure for the whiteness but is there a reason she is having so much milk (cows)
(4 serves of milk + dairy?)

I wonder if it has anything to do with it?

    Hi Pink Palace,

Yeh im trying to wean her off the diary as I think we are only suppose to give then 2 bottles of milk now but I am struggling with getting her to drink less and eat more.

But she has been having this much diary (ie her diet hasnt changed) for a while.

I wonder if the surplus calcium has caught up with her?

White poo can be an indicator of malabsorption. I would take her to the Dr if it was my DD.

white poos are fine. I'm not sure what causes it but it doesn't last and is nothing to worry about.

From 12 months the recommendation is no more than 3 cups (around 200mls per cup) of milk per day, otherwise it interferes with solids. And too much cows' milk can lead to some nutrient deficincies. You can have cheese and yoghurt as well.

The odd white poo is perfectly normal, especially after a tummy upset.

However continuing white poo (more than a few days after any tummy bug has gone and with no variation in colour) CAN be an indication of liver problems. I only know this because after a nasty tummy bug last month DD had white poos and i called the GP who mentioned pediatric hepatitis (YIKES!). He said to bring her in if she seemed ill in other ways or if the poo didn't get colour again within a few days (it laster only 1 day). When the liver is ill it cannot make bile, bile is what colours poo - undigested bile = greenish yellow, a la diahorrea, digested bile = a billion shades of brown, a la normal poo. It takes quite strongly coloured foods (beetroot etc) to colour poo more than bile does. So milk won't be making it white.
