My seven-week old daughter Katrina (I love saying those last two words) usually stays awake for long periods but also sleeps for long periods. So during the course of a day she'll normally have periods where she will be up for a couple of hours but she'll have at least an hour's nap, then usually she will have two long sleeps of between 4-6 hours each overnight. When she's awake everyone comments on how alert she is, looking around, smiling cooing etc. etc. The MCHN implied that she was awake for too long during the day but shut up quickly when I told her about her long night time sleeps.

Today she is hyper-alert. Just won't sleep for longer than 20 mins. She cries if left in her cot and won't go back to sleep despite calming words, rocking etc. etc. etc. but is fine once we get her up (no crying or screaming). We've fed her on and off for about the last seven hours but still she won't settle for long. Have tried rocking, pram walking up and down etc. etc. Every time she wakes up, she just does her usual nosey parkerness and looks around everywhere. Have tried lying down with her, still no luck, will go to sleep briefly then cries until we let her get up.

Any suggestions - as I said she doesn't seem in the slightest bit distressed but I'm wondering how we're going to get any sleep tonight.
