Red face Rolling causing sleep probs...

    Hi all,

My gorgeous 7 month old is a clever little roller (from back to tummy) which is very impressive and cute...until she does it several times thru the night and wakes herself (and then the rest of the household) up

A friend has mentioned that you can buy some kind of wrap that goes around the cot mattress and then does up around the bub's tummy to keep them sleeping on their back...I'm not convinced that this is a great idea, but that's probably just coz I've never heard of it before and I'm not sure how it could safely work??

Anyone heard of this, or better still, does anyone have any ideas that don't involve rushing out to buy another piece of baby paraphenalia (sp? )??

I don't mind too much coz 9 times outta 10 DD will resettle once I've flipped her over, rewrapped her and shoved the dummy in, but lately she?s getting quite upset and has continued to cry even after being re-settled, or alternatively, she?s wide awake and thinks it?s playtime, lol.

I realise that this is just a development issue, and that she?ll grow out of it, but at what age??

Just throwing this out there for some advice and opinions!! Thanks in advance...

Ooops I think I've posted this twice - sorry!!

We have this same issue - started at around 7 months and is still a problem at almost 9 months - long phase for us! DD sleeps in a grobag and I suspect this makes it harder for her to flip back over (as would a wrap) but she needs it for warmth. I don't have an answer for you as we have similar issues here. It will pass, I guess, when they are more mobile (I think our DD is a little slow in learning to fully roll so hopefully your bub will be more proficient by 9mths).
By the way - I don't like the sound of the wrap that does up around the tummy - sounds to restrictive (amost cruel) to me. I would prefer to have disturbed sleep than to keep my child tied still!

I went through this exact same thing when DD was about 4 months. She had been rolling for a couple of weeks and started to roll in her sleep and waking herself up. She was also wrapped at this point too. I did get those 'wrap' things - which were more of 2 'triangles' connected by some material that just goes under the baby (they weren't too expensive - got them from Target I think) and she slept with them for about 3 weeks before she wanted to roll when in her cot and got cranky when she couldn't!

Her sleep was never the greatest in those early days and I ended up contacting Karitane for some advise, to which I was told:

    * if she is rolling, and can push herself up onto her hands (outside of the cot), them I need to unwrap her because of the suffocation risk if she rolled in her sleep and couldn't push herself up.
    * This is a stage and baby will eventually learn to roll over, while still asleep and stay asleep, and will prob end up on the belly, where most children end up sleeping once unwrapped and rolling anyway!

DD was always in a sleeping bag but always managed to roll in them anyway (and stand, and crawl and walk...but that's a whole different story!!!).

I know how frustrating it can be when you are constantly woken up. But I can only say that it IS a stage and it WILL pass. Just hold on, and if possible (and only if you are comfortable wiith it), let your DD roll, unwrapped, while in bed. You may find that she sleeps easier being able to move more freely, and get comfortable by herself.

DD did the same and it did pass! I posted asking about the same thing and whether to do something to stop her being able to roll back at the time she was doing it - everyone told me it would be better to let them get past it on their own - which i did and as I said DD did stop waking herself up. She is now a tummy sleeper (has been since about 6mths, which freaked me out to begin with). I do agree with another pp that maybe leaving her unwrapped could be a better way - so that her arms are free to push her up off the bed if she needs to.
