sick bubba, please help...

I have a sick little girl, she is almost 14 months old. She woke up with a temp at 38.8 and I gave her some nurofen. Then about 2 hours later, we headed to doctor. Her temp was still in the 38's but had dropped slightly. He said her ear was a little red but not much, throat looked fine. She has been sleeping a bit today but I have been sleeping with her.Tonight she is no better, still hot to touch on head but still giving nurofen every 6 hours.

She hasn't eaten today really. I must admit that I am worried. Every time she falls asleep, she will wake every couple of minutes with a jolt. Like she is falling, shocked IYKWIM. What is this?

DP has gone to work tonight. I will sleep with her again but any idea what this might be?

What is the jumping thing? It is really strange!

Aww, the poor little thing. It sounds like she is fighting of an infection? The jumping to me sounds like it might be part of her fever? I know when I've had a high temp I have jumped like that while trying to sleep.

Did the Dr suggest what it could be? She probably won't have much of an appetite while she is unwell, but try and encourage her to drink as much as possible.

I hope she makes a quick recovery .

Hmmm not sure about the jumping thing other than it is probably because she not getting into a deep sleep pattern with her feeling so under the weather.

the temp is pretty high though. does it seem to subside after you give her the nurofen?

as for the eating, that is perfectly normal. just make sure that she is getting some fluid. my DD who is about 18 months went off her food for about 3 days when she got sick with a cold and had high temps.

but look, if you get really worried, or she does start to go quite floppy or unresponsive then just take her to A&E. there is no shame in taking her for a temp. we have had a couple of midnight escapades and they all have told us it is worth coming in if we are really worried.

nurofen dropped it today to about 37.8 but now it is back up to 38.1 again and she had nurofen an hour ago. so worried about the jolting might call the government health line for kids

My DS was like that when he was sick just before chrissy. Very jumpy & unsettled.
He was admitted to hospital for 2 nights, but he was dehydrated & slept for about 8 - 10 hours the day he was admitted. On average his normal sleeps through the day were only adding up to 4 - 5 hours at the time.
They have no idea what was up with him. All they could tell me is that it was a viral infection of some kind. His main symptoms were a high fever, very... doey, out of it kinda thing, really unsettled when awake & not enough wet nappies. Refusing BF & water as well.
They did blood, urine & stool samples which showed nothing.

The most important thing atm is keeping her fluids up. I was advised 10mls every 10 minutes or so. Its a good idea just to keep water on you & just keep offering it. Keep an eye on her wee's.
You can try a luke-warm bath to help with the fever too.
You can use both panadol & nurofen alternately to keep up with the fever & help her feel better.

In my experience panadol works better with a fever - and is still ok on an empty tummy.

The Children's Hosp in Melb actually recommends that you don't alternate these two medications. The current recommendation is, if you need too, give the two together but don't exceed the overall dose guidelines during 24hrs. The rationale behind giving the two together has to do with the receptors each medication targets in the brain and cutting them off prematurely by giving a second drug before the first has the opprotunity to peak in effectivness.

Also keep in mind that neurofen should be given with food/milk in the stomach.

Perhaps try panadol for fever relief - neurofen is better for pain relief where as panadol is brilliant in treating fevers. Also reduce the amount of clothing baby is wearing (a nappy and singlet should be enough providing they don't become cold and shiver which will actually increase their temp).

Definately keep up fluids. If you child won't drink/feed, grab yourself a 10ml syringe and syringe cool boiled water slowly into their mouth regularly. Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration.

hope she feels better soon, good idea to call nurse on call and go to hosp if you are really worried no harm in going in with a little one i say. i agree i find panadol better for a fever, but do what your dr recommended.
dont worry about the not eating, as the others have said just try to keep fluids up. if she is drinking you could also do a smoothie or something to get something into her, but really water etc for a few days shouldbe ok.

Really? I wish someone had let me know. I've had chemists & docs saying its ok. I've almost always done it if I've had the 2 in the house at the same time.
Except DD1 as she's asthmatic. I only give her panadol.
