    Signs of a windy baby

    Hi all,

I am having a trying time with my DD the past few days, today has been the worst since coming out of hospital last week.

So just want to get the knowledge out of other mums as to what sorts of signs did your baby give in regards to being full of wind.

And do you think these signs could mean that DD has trouble bringing wind up - legs curled up close body, blue/purple around the mouth (hosp told me this was sign of wind), feeding often, grizzling and grunted, only falling asleep while being held and once in bassinette awake again...

I've tried all the burping techniques and not much comes from them. When is the best time to try bring the burps up - through the middle of a feed or at the end or both? How long to you work on getting a burp up?

I've heard that there are a few things you can give bub (infants friend etc) would that be worth trying?

Oh and DD has only done one dirty nappy since this morning, so that could be adding to her problem..

Todays been a tough day and there has been lots of tears from me....

(i posted this in the clic/reflux section too... )

If diff positions are not working.

Try a nice warm bath with maybe some lavander and camomile soap or a massage.

oh hunny....its really hard in the beginning trying to "get to know" your baby and his/her signs.

The things you mentioned are classic signs of tummy discomfort. I would try one of the Brauer mixes. Either Colic Relief or Stomach Calm.

I have the colic relief and Mason loves the taste. Within a couple of minutes he is farting beautifully lol

I would burp her in the middle of the feed as well as at the end. I would work on getting a burp up for about 2 minutes. First try patting her back, then rub up and down. See if that helps.

But definitely try to change her position...sitting, laying, change sides etc. Also try laying her on her back but lifting her legs up in the air. This will help ease the pressure in her tummy.

Good luck sweetie, you're doing a great job

    Hi there,

My baby girl is 9 weeks old and she was like your bub for the first couple of weeks after she was born. I know how you feel, it is very tiring trying to work out how to help your bub when they have wind. Our solution was Infant friends! It really seemed to help and we used to give it to her before feeds. I would then try and burp her in the middle of the feed as well as at the end. Another thing that helped was elevating her mattress in her bassinet (by putting folded towels under the mattress). She seemed to sleep better as she was slightly upright.
Hope this helps and good luck! Just remember things will get better!

Caro - thanks for the email. I will check him out

Thanks everyone else for your replies. We had a good night last night, I thought it was going to be horrible but bub and I managed to sleep, but she was grizzling quite a bit. I put her bassinette on an incline, she seems to have liked that.

I gave her a nice bath last night, well she didnt think it was very nice tho! LOL and I massaged her afterwards as well and managed to get a burp out of her. Things have improved today with a dirty nappy and some more burps. I am going to look in to getting something to help her out, it just broke my heart yesterday seeing her so unsettled!

Veronica, if it was just a once off, it is possible it was something you ate too that upset her tummy a bit. Sometimes it isn't always the usual suspects that will cause it either.

Anyway, you are doing a fab job with her so far, well done!

Yes, definitely have a good think about what you ate. For the first couple of weeks, everytime I ate spag bol, Nina would become very windy and unsettled.

V- this is a good thread that you started. We have had the same problem with Kaetlyn. I thought it was she was just unsettled, but she has showed all the signs of being 'windy' as well. will keep an eye out on it. I also noticed that she was worse the days after I ate 'garlicy' meals. Might be just a coincidence or not.....

Thnks Danni. May try that one day if she doesnt settle. I tried it before a feed but it really didnt do much. Got more burps after a bath!

Sara - no worries *hugs* its so hard to understand what our bubs want huh! We are learning everyday, we're always learning!

Veronica - if you got the colic mix from the Padbury pharmacy you give it after a feed. Oh, and I got more "bottom burps" from her with the colic mix than I did "normal" ones but hey so long as the wind is out, out is out!

My little girl was (and still is) very windy. Almost always blue around her mouth. Like you, I had heaps of difficulty getting wind out of her and felt like I was bashing her black and blue trying for so long until her paed finally said to me that if you don't get the wind up in 5 minutes its not coming!! She is now 3 months and is much easier to wind so unfortunately I think it is just one of those growing things and until your little girl is a bit bigger and better developed internally it may be an ongoing problem. I found elevating the cradle/cot like you said worked really well, as well as holding her upright after her feeds for at least 10 minutes.

Lulu - I am planning to get the colic mix from Padbury tomorrow as I couldnt get down there yesterday so just got some stuff from the local chemist. I hope we get positive results from it like all the others I have read about!
