Question Switching from a Bassinet to a Cot

    Hi Everyone!

My DD is fast growing out of her bassinet and I am looking to move her into her cot! I'm just wondering how other people have gone switching them over? I don't think there will be any probs (apart from the fact that she likes to sleep against the side of the bassinet and it might not be so comfy her her to do this in the cot).

Also we are off to Melbourne mid next week - and the hotel will provide us with a cot...so I would like to try and get her used to it before then!

Any advise - tips - stories would be appriciated!

Natty, I didn't have any problems with either of my boys. I just put them straight in and they were fine. But if you find that it's not that easy for you, try to put something in the cot that was in the bassinet (like the sheet not washed) so that it has a familiar smell. If that still doesn't help, you can try putting the bassinet in the cot for a day or two and then transition. You can also try day sleeps first before night sleeps if you are having problems. I would start by moving her in first, and then use the other steps only if required. Good luck, I hope it goes well for you.

PS Neither of my boys had any issues with a portacot at that age either so fingers crossed you will be fine at the hotel.

    Hey Nat,
Im in the process of getting the cot ready so i can do this too... I'm pretty sure she will have no problems because she slept in the portacot for 3 weeks down in taz... If you are worried my mum suggested putting her in it for her day naps the first couple of days and see how she goes...

I think i had the problem more than my DD's moving from bassinet to cot.....(moving out of our room into their own room...big step for mummy !!!). We did it around 10 -12 weeks too.....good luck.

I never had a problem with any of my kids either, was just straight in as well. Ashton likes to wiggle his way right up to the very top corner, from the bottom of the cot and sleep there LOL

i'm dreading this stage = and it's happening soon for us cos our bub is exactly the same length as her basinette! (eight months old).

i think the drama will be which ROOM she's in, not whether being in a cot or bassinet.

i'd love to have her cot in our room, but there's no space, so i agree with a PP, the trauma will prolly be me worrying about her and going to check a gazillion times to see she's still breathing and ok.

Well I moved the cot into our room (I'm not ready for her to sleep in her own room yet!) and she slept in there last night! She hadn't slept very well during the day so she went to bed early. She went down ok although she kept moving her head from side to side - looking for the side of the bassinet which she like to sleep up against! She slept 7hrs before she woke for a feed (this is normal!). But after the feed it was not so good! She woke a few times (still looking for the comfort of the side of the bassinet) and at about 4am I cuddled her in bed with me till she went to sleep then I transfered her back to the cot. She then woke at 6am for another feed (normal when she goes to bed early) and there was no way of her settling in her cot so I cuddled her in bed with me till 8am.

So overall she took to the cot well - but is still looking for the comfort of the side of the bassinet to sleep up against (BTW - the bassinet had a breathable side!). So not sure how to tackle that problem in the cot! Not sure if I should get a breathable cot bumper so I can lay her near that!?

Thankyou for all of your feedback! Must say I did miss having her further away from me in the night - I think it will be a LONG time before I put her in her own room! LOL!!!
