    water / sippy cup question

DD has just started solids (like 5 days ago) and is on farex. I know that when they start solids that I'm supposed to introduce a sippy cup but I'm wondering how to teach her about the sippy cups. Any pointers/suggestions?? I have a nuby one with the big handles..

Also DD used to drink water as a newborn but now screws her face up at it. I've tried it cold, warm like her bottles, room temp and all no good. Another thing with the solids I've been told is to introduce water with her meal. Any pointers on how I can get her onto drinking plain water???

I don't know what the nuby cup is like, but DD liked her first sippy cup because it had a hard, rubbery teat and it was nice to chew and suck on. I guess she got used to the water that came out when she did that. I gave it to her as kind of a play thing I guess. I don't know if it makes any difference but it didn't have any handles, it was quite small and had rubber grips down the sides so she could hold it easily.
Sorry my memory is bad, but I think it may have been a Heinz one.

We had the Nuby one with big handles too but I found that the flow was too fast and water went everywhere. Also DD chewed the 'teat' which made the holes bigger. So we got a Heinz Baby Basics (it's greeen and yellow and you can get them in W/Worths) and used the plastic thing (it comes with it) in the lid so she has to suck for it, the water doesn't flow. Just start with a few sips each day. And I just used the water from our filtered tap. Quite quickly DD started holding it herself and now, months later she is great with it. Chloe will get the hang of it in time. There is no great hurry but more a slow introduction and having fun with it is needed.

Charlotte hated the ones with the flow regulators, so I got her the Pidgeon one with the teat, the straw and the other rubbr teat thing? lol Anyway, she loved it! It only took a couple of go's of me showing her by drinking form it myself and of offering it to her. I offer her water all the time, always have. About 2 weeks later she was holding it herself... still took her longer to hold it up to drink from it, but she knew how to do it. I got a Nuby one as well, cos couldn't find another pidgeon one, and she liked that too when she got the hang of it.
Now she drinks from Straws or poptops or straight from the glass. Just point them in the right direction adn they catch on pretty quick

WRT to the water, perhaps you could add a teaspoon of honey to it and lessen it over time until she is drinking plain water? I know you don't want to add the juice, but if you have tried everything else?
    Good luck!

I just use cheapish (cheap... I wish!), generic cups and DS has always loved them. Never with a flow regulator though, I took those out.

If you offer water at meals, it will be drunk. But don't fret too much about it now, it's not the most important liquid to offer. DS wouldn't take boiled water at any temp, but always loved tap water.

I second the vote for the pigeon cup - the second stage one is great for when you first introduce water. It's got a silicone spout - so it's a good in-between for bottles & cups.

I used to give water to DS after meals, lying down on the floor (it took him a while to get the hang of tipping, so if he lay on the floor, he could control the cup himself). For the first month or so, he would just put the water in his mouth & then spit it everywhere - it's part of the learning process!! - I think he liked the feeling of the water in his mouth etc, but didn't really want to drink it. After a month or so, he started to drink more. Now, 6 months on, he is a fabulous water drinker - he has a couple of big cups every day (in addition to his milk).

Sorry Limesplice, but I would be very wary about giving honey in water!! Firstly, you aren't supposed to give them honey until 12 months because of the risk of botulism. Secondly, sweetening the water is bad for their teeth. Finally, it's much better for them to get used to water without any sweetening - once you start sweetening, it's hard to go back! A lot of the mums in my Mum's group have added juice to their baby's water - but now their baby won't drink it plain (they always have diluted juice). DS has never tasted anything other than water (no juice etc) - so he is content to drink it plain.

I would just keep offering it after each meal, but not worry if she spits it everywhere, or seems uninterested. She's still so little at the moment & is getting her fluid from milk. Giving her water is mainly about getting her used to it.
