Question tring to get powdered medicene down a 6mth old???

Looking for some ideas. We've started with BLS (okay only 3 times since Christmas Day but hey got to start somewhere). I'm still Bfing DS (about to turn 6mths tomorrow). He has really dry skin/ dermatitis and has been prescribed a pro biotic and another tablet (which I need to grind up for him to take) BUT the little ratbag spits most of it out when trying to give it to him (I need to give it too him 2x a day). I had tried mixing the pro biotic with cooled boiled water and we would get about 1/2 swallowed (so gave up on it for a while). The other tablet was only prescribed today after it was discovered that it hadn't gone through my milk to him.

I need to have some suggestions on how to try and get the stuff into DS without him spitting it out or getting overly upset when having it. The naturopath suggested mixing it with honey (manauka because it apparently doesn't have bacteria in it - not too keen on this just in case as it's recommended that honey not be given before at least 12mths) or pureed pear or apple - I don't want to buy pre-made stuff and I don't have time to do this.

(We've tried the creams the GP prescribed and they don't clear it up for long have also tried the moo goo creams and QV creams and same thing happens)

I'm thinking of trying to mix the powders with breastmilk to see how that goes but don't quite know what to try if that doesn't work.

(I'm also posting this in the baby led solids section to see other suggestions)

yeah I wouldn't go the honey either, but I'm not sure this is such a great suggestion at his age either....but I'll put it out there anyway.
What about mixed with 1/2 -1 teaspoons of plain yoghurt?

I'd mix it with some EBM and syringe it into his mouth. Is it much?

Don't have any real ideas, but a friend of mine has a daughter with cystic fibrosis - the recommended way to give those kids their medications is to open the capsules and put the powder on a spoonful of apple puree. It does work, and I feel that the jars of apple puree baby food can't be too bad when the ingredients are just apple and vitamin C. If you're worried about it going off before you can use it all, you could freeze the puree in ice block trays and only thaw what you'll need for that day.

If you buy a tin of pie apple, or pear in natural juice, it's not too hard to blend that with a bit of water, and usually there's no added sugar (just check the tin). Or natural yoghurt like Jalna maybe.

I know that you're doing Baby Led Solids, but given that this falls under medication and not normal eating as such, perhaps you would consider mixing the powder with the puree/yoghurt and spoonfeeding him?

You could mash some soft fruit or some cooked vegies amd mix it with that. Also cooking fruit it does not take long. peal and core an apple cut it up and pop in in the microwave then mash with a fork

Although my daughter is older the only way I can get medication into her is to mix it in with puree pear. I buy pear halves in syrup as that contains no additives or chemicals.

    Good luck.
