At what age did your babe go from cot to bed? Any tips on making the move?

My little guy is nearly 2 and still rolls around the cot like crazy at night.
However we are pregnant with number 2 (very early days) and are projecting the need to move him to a bed with time to spare so he adjusts and does not think he is being booted out from the cot to make room for the babe
When did you move your little one?
    Any tips?
Also just as an aside, any tips likes or dislikes about the bed you bought your little one? Did they go straight into a single or go via a toddler style bed?
    TIA.
    Belinda.

we put DD into another room in a normal single bed at 2yrs with two side rails so she couldnt get out, she was upset at first, wanted her cot but we persisted with it! shes was fine, we recently took the last rail off and just have a small pillow on the edge under the fitted sheet to stop her rolling off.
    goodluck!!

hi - we moved DS when he was about 19 months... but he wasnt so into his cot.
we got a king single with a bed rail and also put lots of padding on the floor around it. he has only fallen out 2 times.
he has slept a lot better in the bed (was a pretty bad sleeper beforehand) as it happens...
we made a big deal out of the bed - took him to 'choose' it, got great linen, brought him in to see it all set up etc etc. it has been v successful here... we get him to show off his bed to gparents etc
    hope that helps

I can't quite remember when we moved DD, think it was a little before she turned 2? We moved her into a King Single we already had in the room. I put her in the bed for day time naps to start with, trying to ease her into the bed that way, but she hated it. eventually she settled down and when we had her sleeping in her bed, we just pushed the cot up against the side of her bed until we could get a bed rail. She seemed a bit happier when the cot was up against her bed too.

ds was about 16 months we put the cot against the bed(one side off)so he could get used to the space then took the cot away..
dd has been in a bed for about 6/7 weeks(will be 2 soon) we have done it the same way although i think the fact both also co slept/sleep most of the time means they are used to edges.

DS was 13 months. He used to thrash about in the cot so moving him to a bed was a simple solution. He has always slept much better in his bed and with a rail on one side he doesn't fall out.

OK, just want to stalk this thread as DD is almost two and can climb on top of the cot rails. She hasn't actually fallen out yet but she could. I just bribe her to get back in with the threat of not reading her a story at the moment.

But I think the bed rails we have are only half-length so I'm a bit reluctant to transition her because I reckon she'll just scoot to the end of the bed and then get out.

Think I just have to take the plunge though!

DD was just over 2 when we moved her. Altho she slept odd angles in the cot once she was in a bed by a few nights she started sleeping straight.
We took her with us to pick the bed, sheets, doona cover etc, called it a princess fairy bed made a big deal about it so she was very excited.
First night she climbed out the end and was crying at the foot of the bed quite upset but was ok after that stayed in til morning.
Only other thing was for the first few weeks she started getting up a fair bit earlier cause she could get out on her own, so it was like as soon as daylight came she wanted to get out, once the novelty wore off she slept longer.

my eldest 2 were both 12months old when they were moved into their BIG beds...simply slid the cot matress under their bed and pulled it out of a night incase they fell out of bed...had no problems with them transistioning into BIG beds...

We made a huge deal of DS moving to a "big kid's bed" just after he turned 2.

We also went out and bought a Lightning McQueen bedspread and side rail. He was so excited about sleeping under the bedspread, he didn't even realise he'd made the transition. A bit of commercialism never goes astray. He picked the bed spread too - it was between Thomas and Lightning.

I left DS1 in his cot as long as possible becuase he rolled around so much. it was only when it became dangerous and he was trying to climb out that we moved him.
He fell out of the bed for at least 4months.
he refused to sleep entirely if the rail was on the side so we never used it.

We haven't moved DD yet but have purchased bed ready for transition - for same reason - number 2 is on the way!

A few tips I've heard and things we are going to try is:
    1. We have trundle bed too so maybe start with that because it's closer to the floor
    2. Have both the bed and cot set up in room and let DD make choice of whihch one to sleep in.
    3. On remove cot when we are comfortable that the transition has gone well
