what was your baby doing at 8 months

hello ladies, just wondering if you could all share with me what your baby was your baby doing at 8 months of age? for example, was he/she crawling, sitting up etc etc.

Also I am curious as to what your baby was eating at 8 months of age? lumpy foods or finger foods, using pincer grip etc etc...

I just would like to know what to expect at my ds age. he is crawling (more of a comando crawl) and we are starting to give him chunks of avocado and cooked soft vegies but he is still on pureed/mashed/lumpy foods for now (i think its more us holding him back because we are terrified of him choking)

I hope I am doing the right thing by introducing things slowly because I have had the mchn tell me he should be on finger foods by 8 months.. but we are only just starting that stage... iykwim

    thanks in advance.

It sounds like you are doing a perfect job . Don't let the MCHN stress you out, do things at a pace that you and your DS are comfortable with. I really only started DS2 on finger food at around 8 months too, now at 9 months of age he is really good at eating it.

At 8 months DS2 could sit up unaided, but he only started commando crawling last week! My first DS was commando crawling at 6 months and hands-and-knees crawling at 8 months, they are all so different. DS2 is much less motivated than DS1 ever was, I kind of enjoy having a more laid back child LOL.

At 8 months DD1 was crawling, sittin unaided, pulling her self up on furniture and crusing round nicely, saying about 4 words, eating small amount of what we ate for dinner (so very lumpy and not mashed), sandwichs, fruit.

DD2 at 8 months had only just learned to roll tummy to back, back to tummy and over and over like a rolling pin and only saying dad and nan. Could nto sit unaided and has even touched solids. Milk is her only food. Now at 9 months she is full on crawling, sitting unaided but still no solids what so ever!

My DD was sitting unaided but was only just taking to solids ( this was my fault because she was having 6 bottles instead of 4 bottles and so was not hungry for food. As soon as I cut down her bottles, she took to solids), so she was having mashed food aswell. Due to this I didn't start with lumpy food untill she was 9 months and for finger food she was 10 or 11 months.

I wouldn't worry. Each child is different and do it when YOU and your DS are ready. Not when the MCHN tells you to.

Hi sirenz, my baby is 9 months now but at 8 mths she could sit unattended was crawling and pulling herself up on everthing and could walking along holding onto something, to be honest it's a nightmare she looks way to little but when they wana go it's hard to stop them she needs a baby crash helmet. she is also using her two fingers to pick up small things and is starting to put her toys from one hand to the other.

she isn't great on the eating side of things though she dosn't like anything too lumpy her favorite foods are pured broccolie spinich and pea with apple from raffertys and chicken and sweet corn by heinz 4-6mths food and porrige for breakfast. Finger foods she loves vegimite sandwhiches, cheezymite rusks she also likes bannana, apple and pear and sultanas and cheese, she really gags on carrot her gag reflex slowly getting better though she will eat her finger foods fine but when it comes to giving her a lumpy lunch or dinner home made or bought she will try it once, gag on it and refuse to have anymore but we will get there. enjoy your little man while he stays in one spot b4 you know it 2 seconds and you'll be serching the house to find his latest hidy spot

sounds like your little man is doing just fine there abbilitys can be sooooo diffrent to other kids, congratulations on a job welldone sounds like you are doing your job perfectly *hugs*

'they should be doing this', 'they should be doing that'.....man...it will do your head in if you listen to every word they say. My 11 month old is not crawling, is not walking, is not commando crawling...oh, and does not have one tooth peggy yet !!! If i had listened to what the MCHN had said, and what the text books said, they i would be a wuthering mess by now, huddled in a corner, ripping my hair out. Honestly.

Your MCHN is simply guiding you....she is not telling you what your baby should be doing. Your baby will do it in good time. Introduce finger foods when you feel ready, when you think baby is ready. Not when MCHN tell you too.

It sounds like you are doing a great job....and most importantly you have a happy baby......

At 8 months my DS was sitting unaided, but only if he was put into a sitting position, and starting to commando crawl. He HATED solid food, so I was offering food but without a great deal of success. My staples were the Rafferty's garden rice cereals, often mixed with stewed apple, vegemite sandwiches, avocado sandwiches, cheese, and pureed vegies/meat for dinner. 4 months on, DS still isn't great with food compared to some, but he does eat chunky mixes of vegies, is handy with sandwiches, and is starting to want to control the spoon action. I agree with MBear - don't listen too much to what you "should" be doing - 1/2 an hour on BB will tell you that there's a huge variation in what & when kids reach milestones. It sounds like you're doing a great job anyway.

Claire started sitting up on her own, crawling and cruising at 7 months.
She was not particularly interested in any food other than breastmilk, so solids were not yet much of a success.

DS will be 8 months tomorrow. He is able to stay sitting (if I put him in that position). He moves around by a combination of rolling & commando crawling (but as yet, he can only go backwards or around in circles! ). He says "da da da da" & "ba ba ba ba" - but doesn't really have any words.

In terms of food, he has mashed/pureed stuff for breakfast (weetbix, yoghurt, apple) & lunch (meat & vegies - I use mince so it's quite lumpy). For dinner, I let him feed himself with finger foods (avocado, steamed vegies, etc). If you steam the vegies quite soft, they really are ok - I was frightened about the choking thing too - so I watched him like a hawk at first - now I just glance over every minute or two while I'm doing things in the kitchen.
